I hope very much that you were with me last week don’t let me hear that you missed social media data to find advocates, leaders and hidden vips. Casey golden, ceo of small act, and mark davis, director of product marketing for blackbaud shared ways to leverage social media metrix to find hidden gems among your constituents, and that was pre recorded at the bb con conference that i was at last october and get engaged for amy sample ward, our social media scientists and regular contributor she’s, the membership director for in ten non-profit technology network, and she continued our siri’s on serious engagement through the social networks, looking at staffing, who should staff your social engagement? How much time are they going to spend and what policies do you need? This week e-giving looking back and ahead. Rob mitchell, ceo of atlas giving atlas of giving, tells us how giving did by sector source and state in two thousand twelve and how it will do in two thousand thirteen what sector increased most how did you fare? Compared to the larger picture and what’s ahead? We’re going to give away a few three hundred forty nine dollars atlas of giving subscriptions that will allow you to get instant personalized forecasts for a year, and i’m very pleased that rob is with me for the hour, about midway through tony’s take two my block this week. Is the charitable ira rollover revived? I blogged that last week also, but there’s still, the january ketchup provision that’s available for your donors to make gifts from their iras, and i’ll talk about that. It is now my pleasure to welcome to the studio and back to the show. Rob mitchell he’s, the ceo of atlas of giving, which is at atlas of giving dot com yes, thirty years working in and around non-profits as a fundraiser, executive and consultant, the atlas of giving measures analyzes and forecasts charitable giving monthly by sector source and state, and i’m glad to welcome back to the show in the studio for the first time. Rob mitchell, how are you? I’m doing fantastic, tony, how are you? I’m well to guide you. You’re visiting from texas, right? I am it’s. A we don’t get this kind of weather in texas to off yeah, we’re in the thirties way have been for a few days dahna let’s talk about the methodology let’s re acquaint listeners who may not remember from last january what’s the methodology of the atlas of giving. Ok, well, it goes back tio my experiences, a practitioner, most recently at the american cancer society running the fund-raising programs for the society and i was always frustrated that there was no benchmark that i could use to measure are giving on a contemporary basis the only measurement that was available at that time was giving yusa, which comes out in june mid june, following the giving year and our fiscal year there started in september, the giving us a numbers weren’t particularly useful to me anyway. Bottom line i had a hypothesis and a hypothesis was that charitable giving was directly tied to certain factors in the economy and demographics, and if we could identify what those factors were, we could build a measurement device for measuring charitable giving as it occurs and perhaps a forecast, and i’m happy to say, we’ve been able to do both very successfully. So what we were able to do on what we started with was we we looked at over seventy five different demographic and financial variables econometric down. Is that true? It’s condom actress it’s an album that work, this is a very highly educated all right, great it’s an algorithm, and so what happened was we gave a team of twenty five phd researchers seventy five more than seventy five variables to look at, they came back to us on a national basis. We also gave them forty two years of published e-giving data to look at, they came back to us, they said, ok, these air, the factors that affect charitable giving, and we’ve built an algorithm that when matched against forty two years of published giving data matches with a correlation of coefficient of ninety five and a half percent, which almost never occurs. Okay? And so since then, we’ve been able that was for national giving the toll picture. Since then, we’ve been able to develop specific algorithms for each of nine sectors and for each source of giving individuals, foundations, corporations and bequest and four fifty states in d c okay, excellent, and you can do this looking back and also forecasting for the future. Yes, one of the great things about the factors that we now know affect charitable giving that charitable giving is directly tied to is that we know that many of those factors have already very successful multi year forecast. So we’re able to incorporate those forecast into our our algorithms to measure cheered will giving to produce a very reliable, very accurate forecast, in fact are variants for the last two years on our twelve month forecast, which is the has the most variability it’s kind of like weather. The further out you go, the less accurate it becomes. But our variants this year, for example, was about one and a half percent okay. Ah, how many data points are we talking about? Well, there are literally dozens, it depends on which algorithm you’re talking about. Some of the algorithms are in terms of input variables our it’s on ly a handful and others are more complex, and they range everything from i think most people are aware that charitable giving is tied in some way too gross domestic product, okay? And so many of the variables include gross domestic product. But they include everything from home sales and consumer confidence to even auto parts sales. Believe it or not, really okay, i had a guest on lately who made an analogy between e-giving fund-raising and selling cars. He had an interesting infographic, sort of whimsical, but was making making the point. So now there is an automotive off relationship, okay, unemployment, mazarene heimans huge unemployment well, it’s, it’s huge in some sectors and some sources, obviously individual for individual giving. And you know, tony, one of the things we’ve learned through the process of creating the atlas now on running it for a few years is that the charitable giving machine is very intricate. And so how an organization raises money is oftentimes mohr important related to the economy than what sector that they’re in? And one example i would give you over the last two years as unemployment’s bin as, you know, very high and by historical standards so unemployment’s been high that has a huge impact negative impact on those organizations, which primarily rely on small lots of small individual gifts. I’m by the same token, the organizations that have relied on on major gifts, colleges and universities. Is an example. Thie education sectors done very well the last couple of years, but the stock market has done exceptionally well the last couple of years, and the unemployment rate for college graduates their alumni is less than half of what the overall unemployment rate is for the u s this is all very interesting level these moving parts now you have close to a million data points. Is that right? Are is that right? Or, you know, one of the one of the things is a very high number nine hundred ninety thousand something you’ve got nine hundred ninety thousand data points and so that’s that’s about fifty years of giving history and all the variables that are involved. And so we’ve used that now to create what will be an instant custom forecast for organizations to be able to use, and the reliability is still at the ninety five point, five percent or little hyre it’s, the reliability on that particular product is going to be very high it’s going to be in excess of ninety five percent. We also have what we call atlas premiere, where we actually taken organizations multiyear, giving history and build their own algorithm. We can determine what economic and demographic factors dr giving that for that with them individually for them. Yes, ok, very interesting. We have just a minute before a break. Why don’t you, uh, thi’s two thousand twelve will just give us a broad overview of two thousand twelve, and after the break, we’ll go into the details. Two thousand twelve was a solid giving year, but i’ll parenthetically say, not for everybody, okay, but it was a very good year, right? What it was a very good year. Giving was up six point, seven percent overall in the nation right in two thousand twelve. Okay, we’re going to come back and talk in greater detail about two thousand twelve and also the forecast for two thousand thirteen. All right, so let’s go into detail, rob about twenty twelve let’s start with the sectors who did what? What sector did the best in twenty twelve? Well, we had several sectors that were extraordinarily good. The environmental sector, though it’s, the smallest sector that we measure, had a very good year in two thousand twelve. What what’s the what’s, the proportion of giving that goes to environmental? I think environmental is about five percent of all giving. Ok? And how well did they do? They actually did very well. The environmental sector was up ten point nine percent in two thousand twelve. Okay, let’s, look it at other sectors. I’m sure you have education. Education had a good year. Education e-giving was up eight point eight percent in two thousand twelve. Okay. And disaster relief was was comparable, right? Disaster relief was comparable in large measure because of hurricane sandy or i guess superstorm storm sandy eight point eight percent also a point. Okay, religion. You had said last year that religion was a declining percentage. Of total giving it isthe continues to being continues to be so what is the proportion that goes to religion now? The proportion that goes to religion now is thirty five percent of all gifts go to religion. And was that was a thirty six last year. Was it a percent hyre or it was a percent hyre last year. Okay on dh s o education is now is declining. And how? How much religion is the client? I’m sorry. Religion is declining as a percentage of total giving as a percentage of total. How did it do? Last year in religion? One thousand religion e-giving to churches and religion was still up in two thousand twelve. But it was up less than the national average and up less when compared with all the other sector. So was up four point two percent. Okay. And you had said earlier the national average is six point seven percent. E-giving that is correct. Okay? And how much is that? How much is how much is our total e-giving from all sources? Three how much was in two thousand twelve? Three hundred little over three hundred and sixty nine billion dollars was given. To charities of all kinds in two thousand twelve. Okay, let’s, let’s. Keep it let’s. Keep looking at the sectors. What other ones have you? Have you got there? We did disaster environment, religion, education. Health was up five point eight percent. The arts were up eight percent. Human needs in society was up seven point eight percent international was up seven point three percent. And what the what we call the analogue k did sector, which includes things like donorsearch vise funds was up nine percent. Okay, now this is a world premiere of these numbers, right? These have not yet been released. They have not been released. In fact, our official press release is not scheduled to go out until tuesday. Okay, outstanding. We have a way. And by the way, our forecast is updated each month because just like with a weather forecast, we can’t predict today what the weather is going to be a year from now in new york city, whether is a bad example, i think you should find a different analogy to make them whether well, actually trust the weather are twelve month forecast is a whole lot better than the weather. Okay, rob mitchell let’s get back to some of the numbers on san will be monitoring the hashtag in the studio, but we’re also going toe check it with the show social media manager for final results will come from regina walton. Um to what do you attribute this very strong two thousand twelve giving here? Well, there, there are several things one, as i would say, the stock market had a huge impact. The dow grew at more than ten percent in two thousand twelve, the broader market, the s and p measurement of the market cruise. Sixteen percent in two thousand twelve. That was huge. Gdpr gross domestic product, really gross domestic product, was up and accelerating in the last in the last part of the year, the last half of the year. That was that’s, always good news, forgiving. Home sales home sales are r the the best they’ve been in the last five years. Home prices we have seen the worst. It’s over home prices are on the rebound. There were there were some there’s, some great things. You know, when people think about the economy typically they think about this amorphous economy. And if you listen to too much news from the media, you get a distorted vision of what the economy is really doing because there are certain factors in the economy. I bet that most of our listeners today were unaware that start the broad stock market was up sixteen percent last i agree, i think most people aren’t aware of that. And so now the one thing that is that the year could have been a lot better, because if you consider the fact that individual giving accounts for seventy five percent of all gifts in the united states, unemployment is still a major drag. We started the year with unemployment at eight and a half percent, and now unemployment is at seven point, eight percent. So a slight improvement, but based on historical levels of unemployment still tough and here’s the thing about unemployment to when it relates to giving, if you’re out of a job or you fear becoming out of a job, you discontinue your charitable giving on for the most part, drastically reduced, and then once you become reemployed, what? What our studies show is that you are you’re giving will not continue for another couple of years after you become reemployed because you’re you and your family are making up for it, but you’ve got to catch up it’s deferred expenses, replenishing your savings, the vacations that you didn’t take, those sorts of things so charitable giving there’s a delayed effect and high unemployment and it’s huge in in in the charitable giving pie for the u s because individual giving is such a large part of that seventy five percent. One other thing i’d say on the positive side about individual giving, this was a fantastic year for what i’d call the uber gift. Warren buffett gave a three billion dollar gift this year. Mark zuckerberg, the founder of facebook, gave a gift that was a billion million dollars shy of five hundred million dollars. In fact, there were there were five gifts that accounted for almost two. Point five percent of the entire charitable giving economy, and this is a typical compared to two thousand less this is that this is the year where i would say is the the rebound of the nine figure gift and s o we haven’t had gifts this size in the last couple of years, and this has been good, okay? We have a couple of people who have tweeted the phrase durney i i’m listening live to hashtag non-profit radio looks like michael baker and jim gillette, but we’re going to confirm that the final arbiter of the prizes is the show’s social media manager, s o preliminarily it’s, michael baker and jim gillette on twitter. But we can’t say for sure on facebook. I don’t know we’re not looking at facebook in the studio, but facebook put that same phrase on the show’s facebook page. I’m listening live to hashtag non-profit radio and if your first or second you will win one of these subscriptions you rob, we’re talking about individual giving, so why don’t we talk about some of the sources of given and how those did compared to two thousand eleven let’s start with individual what happened? Individually, individual gifts were very close to the national average and gain percentagewise. Individual gifts were up six and a half percent in two thousand twelve, and we would expect that because that’s such a big proportion such a big proportion of the economy. Okay, well, your foundation’s foundations were up nine e-giving was up nine point three percent and that’s private foundations, right? You distinguish them private foundation. Okay? And and how about corporate foundation and corporate direct corporate foundation and corporate direct was up four point seven percent in two thousand twelve. Ok, and the one near and dear to my heart as a request bequest, we’re up five point nine percent below the national average, though below the national average. Unfortunately, alright, i’s, that all the sources that you, the fact we tracked four sources individuals, corporations, foundations and bequests. Okay with me is rob mitchell he’s, the ceo of atlas of giving, which you’ll find at atlas of giving dot com on. We’re talking about giving last year and later on we’ll get teo this coming year. Let’s, talk about some states. Yeah, you have. Ah, what? What’s? The most generous state in your measures. Well it depends on whether you’re talking about giving growth or total giving because total giving is directly related to population, as you might imagine, california, california, california and new york or big about texas, texas, texas is big and texas had a great year. I don’t know if this is widely known. Texas is the second most populous state, yes, rowing, because california, texas, new york yeah, you’re you’re aware thatyou gets out of that. Of course they have sex, and i’m always proud of things that are bigger and better. Text is texas living up to its number two population size in terms of overall giving it iss in fact, e-giving in texas was up over eight percent this year, and i would tell you this tony about st giving about regional giving if you look at the states that did well last year, no surprise those air, the states that that had the most robust look economies for those states and so texas’s experience as texas is an example is experiencing a huge swell and uptick in the oil business, and it has a very compared to the national average has a low unemployment rate and so other states that have done well the past year, florida, pennsylvania, illinois and so those states have done very well compared to the other states most of the other states were, you know, they’re pretty close to the national average just above or just under okay, well, what? Which state had the largest growth in e-giving from two thousand eleven to two thousand twelve? That distinction falls to let me look at my notes here for a second, okay, that distinction falls, tio see? Well, rob is looking that up. Bye bye source do we have? We have that we do highest increase what? I’m really disappointed, tony, because texas didn’t make it to number one, but illinois was first with seven points. Well, excuse me. Florida was first was eight point four percent. Growth eight point four percent in florida. Ok, eight point for illinois. Second was seven point seven. Texas was in third place with eight and a half percent. Okay. All right, top three. Interesting. We have just about two minutes before before our break. Do you consider donorsearch vise funds? How do they think they work into your that’s? A very big source of its e-giving. And then ultimately, hopefully sometime there’s a delay of gifts to charity had well, the way that it’s working now is very interesting because those gifts are factored in. And if you look at our largest donor advised funds the fidelity gift fund, they they’ve renamed it, but they had a they had a record year for the second year consecutively and grants made out of the fund and on new gifts into the fun really grants out. Yes. Very interesting. Yes, but we like to say and so but they’re they’re they’re gifts in group. Believe it or not. Year over year eighty nine percent from two thousand eleven to two thousand twelve. Holy cow! Are you sure? Yes, pasha it’s. Not a mistake. Positive. You can go to their website. Check me. Welcome back to big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent time now for tony’s, take two at roughly thirty two minutes into the hour. My block this week is the i r a charitable rollover revived. I mentioned it last week, but i want to spend another a few minutes talking about it because you still have this. Your donors to still have this january catch up provisions a reminder that the ira e-giving was revived in the american taxpayer relief act that was passed on january first. It’s not really a roll over, roll over is the ah popular phrase it’s ah it’s actually a distribution and it’s called a qualified charitable distribution so that’s what i’m going to call it, i use roll over on the block just because that’s, what people are going to search for your donors have to be over seven, seventy and a half or over on the date they make their gift. They do this from a traditional or a roth ira. They have ah, maximum qualified charitable distribution of one hundred thousand dollars per ira owner and that’s across all the across all the qualified charitable distributions they might make. The different charities per year, so one hundred thousand dollars maximum per ira owner per year, and the distribution has to go directly from their ira, too. Your charity this january catch up provisioned that i mentioned is that if if they make a qualified charitable distribution to your charity in january, got to do this before february first, then they can count it toward two thousand twelve, and that will do two things for them in two thousand twelve. It will be eliminated from their taxable income, so it’s not reported as income, and it will count toward there rmd or required minimum distribution. So two thousand twelve most people have probably already met their required minimum distribution because we didn’t know we were gonna have these this catch up provisions. So by december thirty first, people probably already took what they what they needed to otherwise they would have been penalized, but this has the advantage of being nontaxable and still counting toward that required minimum distribution. There’s a lot more about this on my blogged at tony martignetti dot com, including a one page downloadable briefing that i wrote for you that you can use to brief your board use it in the newsletter or email blast. Ah, that is also part of that post on my block, continuing now with rob mitchell, ceo of atlas, of giving and rob, why don’t we talk a little about you’re twenty thirteen forecast? Well, thanks, i love talking about the forecast, although i i’m afraid i don’t have great news for two thousand thirteen so the atlas, by the way, is the only forecast for charitable giving in the us and it’s been very reliable on dh, as i mentioned before, month to month it’s it’s nearly one hundred percent reliable actually for the quarter. It’s a little less reliable than it is for the six month period but for twelve months ahead. It’s very reliable with the variants of about one and a half percent. Okay, so it’s it’s a very reliable forecasts are forecast for two thousand thirteen. We should have a drum roll because it’s the world premiere that’s the world premiere of this forecast it’s a world premiere the forecast for total giving for the united states two thousand thirteen will be three hundred seventy five billion, which is only a one point six sadly only a one point six percent increase over two thousand twelve. Oh, my goodness, compared to six point seven from from last year. Yes. Okay, um, you have something special about the last quarter of this year? Well, actually, the last four months of this year. Indeed, for the first time since we’ve looked at things the it’s actually more than the last quarter it’s out called the last trimester, it starts in september and so what we’re what the atlas is showing for september, october, november and december is that giving will actually be less than it was for those months in two thousand twelve. So if you’re relying on a big year end, this isn’t the year for it. And why do you predict that those four months are going to be so much worse than the corresponding months in two thousand twelve? I think a major factor is the stock market, and we’re not expecting the stock market to have the same kind of year in two thousand thirteen that it’s had the last two years, so stock market growth is certainly a part of it there’s some other factors involved, you know, we talk about individual giving, making up such a large part of the charitable pie and there’s some things that have hit americans starting in two thousand thirteen that are going to have an impact on individual giving for those of us who work and have social security deducted from our paychecks, we just had a tax hike, and so it means less disposable income consumer confidence, though, is it? It rose a bit in two thousand twelve, consumer confidence for two thousand thirteen is not looking so good, so so those are some of the factors that are that are going to drive e-giving to a lower growth point and in terms of of this last the year end for two thousand twelve, you know, we had a we had a great stock market when people are thinking about we also there’s some, there are some concerns and some of the things that drove giving in the last quarter of this year, including things like the the buffet in the zuckerberg gift who are the you know, it’s expected that taxes are going to go up in the charitable deduction is in question may be a loss of the charitable deduction it may. Be a reduction in the charitable deduction, so a lot of people were motivated to give it the end of two thousand twelve gifts of appreciated assets or set up planned gifts at the end of two thousand twelve, and that is not going to be the same case in your end this year. Okay, okay. Just in that little little niche of planned giving them. But you’re you’re measuring realized bequest? Yes, we are ok at people’s deaths. Okay. Okay, rob let’s, talk about how the different sectors are going to fare in twenty thirteen who who looks the best? The best is again well, not again, but the best sector forecast for two thousand thirteen is the environmental sec geever up five point nine percent now that helped that’s helpful and good, but again, the environmental sector is the smallest sector of the nine we measure so there’s. You know, i could speculate as to why the environmental sector is doing well, i think. It has a lot to do with the fact that many of us are more in tune with environmental issues than we’ve ever been before. What is that? What is the largest sector? Well, of course, the largest sector is religion, religion, e-giving your churches and religion okay, predicted to continue its declined one percent at a time. Yeah, well, actually, religion is actually going to gives to churches and religion is forecast to experience a really decrease from two thousand twelve to two, two thousand thirteen, so not only in well, is it going to decrease in percentage of overall giving that it represents also yes, another percent down to thirty probably will be another person for i think we’ll be down to thirty for ok. And how much do you predict that the overall giving to religion will decline? A little less than one percent point eight percent so nearly flat. But it is what we’re showing today is that by this time next year, gifts to churches and religion will have shown a decline. Okay, now all of these predictions get refined every month after month, right? So atlas of giving subscribers and the lucky people who win the wind the subscription khun see month after month how the different sectors are predicted to do for the for the next twelve months or in the next twelve months, right? Not just to the end of the counter here, but for the next twelve for the next twelve months. And this is important as a practitioner, because if you’re setting a budget and let’s say your fiscal year doesn’t start with january one when i was at the american cancer society, our fiscal year started september one, so you want to be able to have a forecast so that you can do your budgeting based on what you’re this whole year is? And one of the other things i’d say that’s important about the update monthly in the forecast is i was at the american cancer society in two thousand won and we were having, ah, good year and most organizations in america, we’re having a good giving year in two thousand one, and then we had september eleventh and the world change and giving came to a near stand still for six months, and so just, you know, there are events that unfold oppcoll month to month not every month and and not every day, but events effect giving. And so a dramatic event like that obviously has a big impact. But their events all over all over the u s all over the world that an impact giving and that’s the reason for checking in regularly with the atlas to see what the forecast has become. Let’s, let’s spend a little more time on the different sectors. Sector predictions for two thousand twelve why don’t you just go through a sari for two thousand thirteen just in the two minutes or so we have a break one before we have a brake lines just run down what the sectors look like for this year. Health is going to be just a bubble above flat at point three percent growth education will be two point, six percent growth, human services, and this also includes disaster services, up four point nine percent. So compared to the field, that sector is expected to do well. The arts up two point seven percent i’ve already talked about the environmental sector up five point nine percent international, up two percent. And then our unallocated sector, which includes things like donorsearch advised funds and those don’t then those charities that don’t fit well in another category up three point seven percent. Okay. And so that analogy hated would consider would include all the social service, human service agencies, grassroots agencies. No, no, no. Those those would be in our human services and disaster. Yeah, we do have human services and disaster. Yeah, i said okay, just a minute or so before the break. Why don’t we just run down? What the different sectors are in terms of which is largely no religion is the largest on that. Gets predicted to get about thirty four percent of giving. Yeah, religion. None of the other fact. How do the other sectors? Fair. Religion is the largest. Currently thirty five percent. Education is next with sixteen percent. Human services disaster services. Twelve percent of the entire giving pie. Um, the unallocated sectors ten percent society benefit eight percent international, five percent. The arts for percent. Another survey question that i want to share with listeners was, do you benchmark your charities giving against others in your state? The previous question was by sector by state, it’s actually reversed on ly one third said yes to that by state, and two thirds said, no, they don’t, and in a couple minutes i’ll have the answers for different types of giving that charity’s listeners are our benchmarking. Rob let’s, let’s. Look at some of the sources of giving in two thousand thirteen, individual, we’ve said a couple times is the biggest. How is individual going to fare in twenty thirteen? Well, consider the context of total giving for the u. S is projected to go up one point, six percent individual gifts. We’ll be up one point, two percent. Foundation gifts. And this is an area that practitioners might want to focus on next year. Foundation gifts are our forecast to be up four point nine percent. Okay. How did foundation do in two thousand twelve, they were up nine point three percent. Yes. Okay. All right. So so foundations is kind of the highlight by source. The low light. Well, before i get to the little light, i’ll give you the other kind of sad news. Tony, given your background is the request giving. No, we’ll only be a point. Seven percent. Now these air realized request. This is not this is not pipeline sort of stuff and plan giving. This is actually realized bequest. This is interesting. So that means that the people who created gift by will years ago are going to die at a slower rate or their gifts or smaller in their wills. What could you possibly know this? Well, there’s. Some demographic factors involved. And so yeah, i mean, the death rate, the population, the age of the population, those sorts of things matter. But more importantly, and more specifically, the value of our persons of state is what matters the most. And so, as you well know, many people leave a percentage of their estate to chair to a number of charities. And so when the value of their estate, because of the value of the stocks that are in this state or the value of the real estate that’s in the estate is is lower than the bequest, the actual realized request number becomes lower. Okay, mix mix. Good sense. I see how you could know that. Ok, why did you continue? Go ahead. S o the sources. So one left and it’s it unfortunately is going to be the low light forecast for two thousand thirteen. Corporate giving will actually decline slightly. Just it’s basically flat but it’s forecast to be down point three percent. Okay. And what would i thought? We’d said religion was going to be down. Well, you were talking about that’s, a sector and i’m talking about me that i’m screwed up. Okay. Sorry. This is sources. Yes. Alright. So business foundations the low light down. Three tenths of a percent. Okay, now this is interesting. Individual giving is going to be up just one point two, um and overall giving will be up one point. Six. Yes. What’s ah, what’s. Boosting the overall foundation giving. Okay, it’s okay. And what’s the percentage that foundation giving represents to the to the total foundation e-giving represents rob on the spot you got me on. Ah, got its thirteen percent of all giving excellent. You have these numbers. He makes you think he’s sifting through papers, but he just he is modest. He has these numbers off the top of his head. I’ll share another survey result. The question was, what types of giving do you benchmark? If if you do benchmark what types of giving total giving? About eighty six percent of people benchmark total e-giving e-giving at specific dollar levels about forty three percent. About twenty seven percent benchmark private foundation giving and about fifty seven percent said that they benchmark corporate foundation giving and nobody benches their planned e-giving i’m dismayed by that it’s interesting there’s no competition in in the death business, which is my business. That’s why i say that my business’s plan e-giving, um, we have just a couple minutes left, rob mitchell and i want to ask you take a love moment. What is it that you love about doing the atlas of giving what is it? What? What drives you about this? It’s it’s learning essentially because all those all those decades is a practitioner. I didn’t have access to this kind of information, and if i were a practitioner today, this would definitely drive how i allocated my fund-raising resource is through the year how i did my budgeting, it’s it’s an amazing thing how how i distributed my fund-raising budget as an example diversification of the way you raise money makes a huge difference and understanding who how you raise money and who you raise it from makes a huge difference to and can increase the levels of your giving. And so we’re learning things because we have access to this information that we’ve never been able to know before, and that is what keeps me going. I really do love digging into these numbers. Oh, i very much hope that you were with me last week. It would hurt me deeply if i found out that you had missed the future of planned e-giving marketing. Sounds very secretive. We’re gonna unpack that. Gentlemen, welcome. Thank you very much. Thank you. Case you want to tell us order audience first. What? What small acts work is sure we were focused in the non-profit industry to help organisations use social media, but also importantly, social data too do better job on social, but also importantly, really realized the value from social and intelligence for all parts organization for direct marketing advocacy campaigns. Okay? And why don’t we stick with you and see hidden pipes is the most sort of interesting part of your seminar topic? What were we talking about? Hidden vips? Sure, so typically within the non-profits they have ah, you know, a large number of people that they received donations from, but they don’t really know the full context of who they are, so they know how much they’ve been given maybe how often or if it’s more than once, but they really don’t know the context of that gift. And so for most often, when we sort of work with non-profits there’s, usually somewhere between one two five percent of their list, that has a really big potential that they just had no idea was there, so they’re kind of hidden. Gems where either they’re a blogger or there very advanced professional in their career and so on. Some really different ways that people are valuable for gun is ations, but they’re just unknown. All the noon was as a donor. Yeah, okay, mark. What? What? What is it you guys are trying to improve upon what we see charities doing incorrectly or not doing that? They ought to be with with their social data? Sure. So where black bod in partnership with small act is what we’ve basically introduced? This concept of a social score and a social score takes simplifies for fundraisers marking professionals and non-profits to really summarize their constituents, whether they be donors or advocates or their supporters into four categories, and those categories span from individuals who are going to be very well, highly connected through social media, those individuals we call key influencers on the second level, we’re going to be those individuals who we call engage er’s. Aii those people that can really expand the message and or holly engage in social networks and the other two categories, which are the masses are consumers, whether they’re consuming from multiple channels, maybe they have a twitter account and have a facebook account and they’re consuming information via by those channels or standard consumers just an individual as a facebook profile. So what we’re trying to really improve upon is having non-profits have a better understanding of their supporter base of their database to understand how these individuals were interacting through social media, okay, and scoring people not unlike you would with a screening for financial wealth. Yeah, way talking, something analogous and absolutely so you know blackbaud we have a whole number of financial scoring metrics, whether it’s wth e-giving score where we could understand people’s based off of their ability to give and their interest to give, this really has to do with understanding and individuals can activity and the reach through social media, how many people can they reach and through their friends and people are following them, but also more than just how deep is that reach? How connected our lead these people are they are they just tweeting once once you know, month oh, are they really tweeting every single day? And they have a very strong connection. So really trying help non-profits find their justin bieber’s in starita base, ok? And now an example. Ok, a great one, but we’ll work with it. It makes the point now, so i around around different social platforms, i do see companies that are trying to tell you how deeply influenced you are deeply influencing you are, or how deeply influencing let’s say in twitter, your your followers are, which, which is a measure of how deeply influencing you are as well, but you’re trying to coalesce this all together, i guess, yeah, so i think the value to is that it’s not just a general influence and i think the big guy of working in partnership with blackbaud is that it’s relating influence on social to meaningful things inside the non-profit to sustainers programs to annual giving to advocacy efforts, and i think that’s really makes it different from any other type of influential rating where it’s not just dozes person connect, but it also incorporates their relationship with the organization and really kind of bringing out the best and how they can sort of be engaged in a win win relationship. So we really try to help take that influence and really could use that in a meaningful way. Okay, now. Mark, is this a is this a blackboard product that what’s the name of the product? That’s called the social score and it’s available through our target analytics, who as you for mentioned the data screening around wealth, they provide the same capabilities for non-profits around wealth screening and that same organization could now provide this opportunity around social going now help listeners understand what’s the relationship between target analytics and what they’re probably most familiar with is your razor’s edge product what’s the relationship between those two? Sure, yeah, analytics and absolutely so. Target analytics is a division of black bug that focus is really on a number of areas, but in particular, talking about modeling. It also talks about data enrichment services, which we talked about, which is really taking your database within the razor’s edge, and the targ analytics team can add new data that you may not have like everywhere from the age or e-giving are they’re giving in other organisations or, in this case, obviously social media connective ity ah, and also the targ analytics team can help on organization with the razor’s edge database, analyze and kind of predict predictably modeling understanding hey, these are individuals who you think you should talk to a little bit more. So when you’re talking to people about in blackbaud about target analytics, you could say that you want to include the social score absolute or it sze already included no itt’s an add on it’s, a new data service that blackbaud much early this year and partnership with small act on dso that’s an add on service and we could talk about the logistics and how it’s doing its really easy, actually, so really, all organization needs to do is to give blackbaud a database of file and really all we need in order match up the social score and a whole bunch of other data really have to do a social networks is just an email address, so we’ll take that e mail address and then using through small lack service, we provide back to the non-profit all ho, ho ah, whole host of information that is all publicly available so we don’t get in and, you know, access data that may be on the facebook’s on individuals facebook profile that’s not publicly available if it’s private setting, we don’t have access to it, but ifit’s publicly available, we have access and we’ll and we’ll give that information. And also, as i said, the social scoring there’s some calculations associated with that. Okay, now, casey, obviously a lot of the work is proprietary, but sure you can. You can you tell us what you can about what small act is doing with that email address? To come up with the social score for each person? Sure. So a cz mark said everything is it’s possible to do this all manually. So just taking, you know, maybe fifteen, twenty, thirty minutes to sort of go to your google searches and find things out there. So what we do is we mapped an email to the social networks that are sort of publicly available and connected. We also then go step further where we actually take a look and at the person’s pope behaviors. So there’s, the first step is to kind of create the blueprint of where this person is a member of and how they socially network. The second step is to understand their engagement, their networks, they’re reciprocity levels, all those types of things. It was really creative, valuable influence or a person who can engage your content or what style is really going to best fit so that’s kind of where we do the blueprint and then we sort of color in the different pieces with a little bit more analytical. I’m understanding of what they talk about, who they talk to, how often you know how much they share and how much people share with them, etcetera. Ok, and how deep are you going into social sites that aren’t particularly common waken all name the easy ones off the top of our heads, but into our maybe kora is one, but how deep are you able to go? Yes, so so we so at a sort of maximum capacity that we find somewhere between twenty to twenty five different networks. So, interestingly enough, you mentioned cora when we’re working with national wildlife as one of the interesting things found in that analysis, those who had a membership encore actually gave significantly more so is very interesting sort of subset of them that they hadn’t even thought about before could sort of minor network pompel yes, oh, it’s comprehensive that way, but but it’s a full set talking alternative radio twenty four hours a day. So i think there’s a, you know, a different couple way to ways to describe it, but, um, in viewing it from our perspective, there’s a lot of thought leaders there, right is people have opinions who have something to say and usually it’s not just chatter, conversation it’s usually a bit more meaningful, sort of kind of like a conversational sort of dialogue versus just chit chat back and forth and that we found theirs or some really interesting again thought leaders, not just conversationalist. Perhaps they really kind of put a lot of time into that. And who were some of the thought leaders in the charity community? I mean, there’s there’s a lot. I mean, it really depends upon the specific. Area, you know, and it’s so arranges across board weathers healthcare or some sort of education or or different wildlife related organizations. Okay, mark so now we’ve identified why don’t you give the four categories again? Just perfectly just take those off. Yeah, so the four categories at the top of level, which represents approximately about andi, this is based off of data from blackbaud is small, like customers we evaluated, but in general, about the top one percent of an organization’s database are those individuals who are going to be key influencers and that’s, the top of the pyramid, these worthy individuals excuse my example, but justin bieber but justin bieber’s got all the twitter followers he’s got everyone who tracks he’s very active on that example. It’s a terrible example. I got craig newmark founder craigconnects. Would he be a key influence? You use him? He’s. Been a guest on the show twice. Actually, fair enough. Fair now is so much better. You can just say i have not had just okay, way turned him down. Actually, i would if you okay, so so that’s. The key in florence. These air individuals who are again have a wide audience on their generating lots of content and their and their content has, you know, lives through a very viral method in terms of it gets kayman to be connected and repurposed to the next grouper engages these are individuals who represent about five percent of the population but actually generate over nearly eighty percent of the content. So these are people who are in there doing consumer reviews, they’re they’re they’re they’re updating constantly through facebook, they may not necessarily have a cz wide of a range of connections is the key influencers, but they’re they’re they’re they’re level of engagement is so high that they become influential and influential in terms of the metal content of generating and then flows that can have and then the other two categories, which are the masses roughly between forty run, forty percent are going to be the multi-channel consumers, these are people that we would described as being on, you know, multiple major networks, so they usually have a facebook and at length in profile, or they’re made perhaps the twitter profile and the last one at least the standard consumers these are individuals who are kind of basically arm or most comfortable and stay in one particular network. And there these these blast two groups of people not necessarily creating lots of content, but they’re consuming content, and they’re they’re using facebook and lengthen all the social networks to to be connected with obviously all their friends and family. Okay, i’m going to take a risk here now and tried to put myself into one of these categories. So this podcast gets about eleven hundred, listeners per per week between it for two years. So we have over one hundred, one hundred episodes, is weekly. I’m totally you know, if i end up on this on the standard consumer, i’ll really be disappointed as a standard consumer. Have a block that gets between thirty, five hundred for thousand unique visitors, not hits, but unique visitors per month. Twitter. About eighteen hundred or so followers following about six hundred, people. Facebook doesn’t matter facebook radio show page has just about just scarcely eight hundred likes dahna number of likes, how do i reach that? I’ve each key influence or casey? I don’t know, i’m not you know, i didn’t mean that i really didn’t mean your floats because that’s great new mark die reaching gauger could i be engaged or status? Get so so actually doing a little bit of profiling on you prior to this, you would definitely be actually in the key influence or category mean craig newmark is, you know, like point. Oh, one percent. Yeah. Absolutly, congratulations. Yeah. No, i know where the segment if you don’t say that. No, i can i can send you a profile. Right? So we were naming the rial outliers. Yeah, among them. We knew all that already way on everything you told us. We already know that. All right? Because if you came on and said, you know, key influencers were, like twenty martignetti that would know no it’s one percent. It doesn’t make the point we love we lower the bar a little mean that lower the bar that’s the wrong way. But obviously, you know the key influences you don’t have to be the super super keum ok, that’s cool. All right, thank you. All right, so now we have these people categorized, we have our follow-up gotta go, mark what’s what’s let’s get started with some advice on what to do with this information. Now, that’s valuable, sure and that’s, you know, our session really, and goes into a lot of that because what we want to do is we want obviously educate non-profits in terms of that, that this information is available, that it is useful, but obviously a lot of non-profits they’re most interested in, you know, how does it how can i use it to find advocates and volunteers? Almost specifically, how can use it to help my fund-raising so with with the work and partnership with small act and all the organizations that we’ve worked with jointly together, we’ve begun to understand that this information is valuable because they’re certain key attributes and trends that these different groups they follow. So we tracked and analyzed individuals based off of their fund-raising potential so is it could potentially this scoring and and the presence of these individuals on certain networks could that actually be a predictor in terms of the ability to give so good example that is linked in lincoln profiles individuals who were on lengthen generally based off the data we’ve seen terms customers have use of the information these individuals have hyre lifetime value and they give hyre average gifts makes sense, right? Because they’re employed, they’re obviously well connected through through the workplace they care about their career. So therefore, these individuals are generally speaking, going to be more wealthy, so that’s a very easy example, more complicated or more sophisticated example, certainly not complicated, but definitely more sophisticated argast examples would be the correlation of an individual who was highly connected, whether the key influence you are engaged or francis the top tier and their ability to reach individuals and, say francis a peer-to-peer fund-raising event. So another group of organizations that we’ve been working with a lot have had a lot of success on this is using it to predict hey, if i’m highly connected, if i can create a network of people through facebook and twitter lengthened, for instance, or thrown blawg then very likely i knew a lot of people and if i know a lot of people than likely, i can probably know i can reach a lot of people to ask them to give me a gift. So if i’m walking for susan g komen race for the cure or make a diabetes association american heart association, these types of organizations can use this information to predict who would be good team captains potentially for walk because these individuals, naturally a good recruiters are very sociable. So it’s a very good predictor like that, and the third good example, by the way highlight that really gets a lot of non-profits thinking is the multi channel consumer. This is not a key influencers not engaged, but that third level there’s a lot of them out there, i feel bad for them as a gay influence, right? I feel bad for the multi-channel consumers well, there’s a lot of them so, so sad that it’s almost a pity that they outnumber you quite a bit, but it’s a good predictor because a lot of non-profit struggle with who our who could they connect with through online channels? You know who’s going to be a good individual who may give an online gift who may be an individuals who will consume email and communications through the online channel. So a lot eso organise you’ve been working with have been using that to predict who could be a good opportunity to give a sustainers gift ah, monthly online gift, which is very valuable for non-profits because it’s it’s recurring revenue at sitting it’s in a longer term engagement with the non-profit and they an individual who’s willing to say, i’m going to give fifty dollars, per month for the next five years is actually worth a lot more than a vigil is going to give a onetime get to six hundred dollars, because they have that that that that connection not that you ever ever used that term, but that commitment to the non profit organization. So a lot of the information we’ve been receiving from organizations is that that multi-channel consumer there used to be an online and they’re comfortable being online. So that’s a good predictor of individuals you khun target for those types of online campaigns? Okay, interesting. Now, what i didn’t hear you say is that you approach them about using there networks or talking to their networks about your work directly, yeah. Trying to help you spread your message through there through their networks, but in a more explicit way, you’re trying to do it suddenly it sounds like, you know, all three of those examples they are i think of it this way, an organization that’s using the razor’s edge or, you know, using whatever databases here and system they’re using this is additional information that can help them target those people for specific existing campaigns. What you’re talking about, which i think is also is a very good example, which i know casey likes to use, the term citizen journalists is finding those those top tier individuals who, you know they’re in your database. So how then your database, how are they connected to you? Can you start cultivating these people to be an extension, really, of your marketing? Can they get out in front of a news story or potentially some sort of of conflict or something like that where they can actually help think newsworthy that release where they either if not directly to your charity? Certainly to the work that you’re doing and how can they help spread that they could spread the message that could spread? Your message, they can connect, record their people, they could potentially become an advocate for your position. It happens to be in conflict with something else that’s going on, maybe that’s newsworthy case if you got a couple a couple examples to, it really also gives local smaller non-profits the ability to understand so one example is maryland public television buy-in working with them, they will there find this key blogger who lives in baltimore, where they didn’t know her so sophistication and she was a key influence, sir, they’re engaging her by just calling around say, hey, come down to our facility and see what we do and understanding she’s big on a lot of sort of sort of women’s issues and programming and things like that. So the key is when you find these influential people make sure that whatever is you’re asking them to do aligns with their existing passion, you’re not going to change their heart, just giving them a place to share their heart and really kind of connected with your mission that’s where i’ve seen a lot of really great things happen in another panel here, so the exact same thing really kind of working with where they are emotionally and in matching up your your mission how that they’d be happy to promote it number one because they’d be more likely to do it, but number to their audience knows that they’re an expert on that or that’s something they really care about as well. Casey, what is it you love about this work? What makes you wake up every morning? Motivated? Sure. Honestly, i really love helping great organizations who do great things in starting this particular company that’s. Why? Folks? Dahna non-profit industry instead of a lot of other compelling, you know commercial areas. Because all you know there’s on ly non-profits you have on ly non-profits and and really me nose was being with someone from st jude today anything we can do to help you know kids go through that life experience better and like that’s. Awesome it’s. Not just a job. It’s it’s. A life experience and so that that’s what makes it worthwhile for us? We have to leave it there, gentlemen. Thank you very much. Welcome back. Time for tony’s. Take two on my block this week is the charitable ira rollover revived this way of giving directly from your ira to a charity was part of the american taxpayer relief act of twenty twelve, which was passed last week, passed by congress, signed by president obama and what it actually is is a distribution technically it’s a distribution, not a roll over. So i call it a qualified charitable distribution because that’s the language in the in the act to do this, your donors have to be over seventy and a half. They have to use an ira or a traditional sorry, a traditional oer a roth ira. So the simple iras and the sep iras are not permitted has to be a traditional or roth you. Ah, each donor can do this up to one hundred thousand dollars per year. That does not have to be to the same charity. Khun b multiple ira’s khun b multiple charities, but the total is one hundred thousand dollars per ira owner on the distribution has to go directly from the i r a to the charity there’s, an advantage that you may want to capitalize. On in the month of january, if people make a qualified charitable distribution before february first, then they can count it toward two thousand twelve, so if they didn’t want to eat up there, two thousand thirteen hundred thousand dollar max, that could count gif ts that they do in january for last year on also if somebody took a distribution in december, if they were, whether they were required to or not. But if they just took a regular distribution from their ira meaning they took the money for themselves, and then they could use all or any part of that december distribution to be a qualified charitable distribution, they can convert it. So now why would you want to do that? What’s the what’s the advantage? They’re two advantages. First, all these qualified charitable distributions are exempt from federal income tax. They’re outside gross income, so not subject to federal income tax, and also they do count toward your donor’s required minimum distribution. A lot of people just refer the acronym r m d and for people who are required to take out more than they want from their ira or more than they need from, they are ira, this could be really advantageous because this gift to charity counts toward that our md that they’re having trouble using they’re forced to take it, but they don’t want to take it. They can use this, tio, eat some of that up. So those are some of the fine points of the ira charitable giving for two thousand thirteen and, um, there’s more on my blogged at tony martignetti dot com and as a special little extra. You’re my guest and i’m very happy to have you here. So what should charities do with this charitable ira? Roll over. Well, i really see this as a bonanza. Will the communications, marketing and promotional bonanza for savvy fund raisers or other people at your non-profit? Eso the first thing that i’d like to do is really think about this as a way to up your communications with your people. And how about a boardmember that you’ve been trying to kind of, you know, get on your side and do a little bit more fund-raising how about how does that sound? Tony used to get a fundraiser on board, use it for a boardmember so, avery, simple tip. Okay, how are we going toe simple like action steps? Because you and i are always talking about the value of news when you have something newsworthy. That’s a good time to communicate with your with your donors and prospects. Right? So this is news you can use to your advantage, and we get so little news in planned giving, so we may as well take advantage of it. Okay, way. Get so little news and fund-raising or any other kind of ways to communicate with our donor. So this is really great. Okay, what should we do? This is what i think someone should d’oh. They should take a look first at your database. Basically, who has been making these types of gifts in the left? Five. Years at your organization. Do you have one eye? Are a gift. Do you have ten? Do you have one hundred? So that’s the first thing take a look at what your history is so let’s say you have five gift in the last few years. This is the perfect opportunity to say thank you to those people and see if you can get them to make more of these kinds of gifts and now you have a reason to call them. So give this little task to that boardmember that you think is, you know, up for the for the challenge, and it gives you something to talk to them about. You could do in a casual way. Say, hey, you know what, here’s some good news for our organization. Thanks. Thanks to congress and talk about it a little bit and then ask them, what do you think about that? And then tell them the history. Say, you know, over the past five years, we’ve had four different people that have made this type of gift biggest gift was, you know, eighteen thousand in the smallest gift with one hundred dollars, and one lady did it three years. In a row, like, give him a little background and bring the men and say, you know, this is a really interesting way to give, don’t you think? And they’ll say, yeah, i didn’t even know about it, so now you kind of brought them in, and so what you do is just say, hey, could you, you know, call these people and have a conversation with him about it, and the first thing they want to do is you want to thank them, thank the donor for making this unique type of gift and then give them the news. I just wanted to let you know congress is past, you know, twenty twelve taxpayer relief act good news for our charity means people can make this kind of gift and that’s wonderful, because that helps us steve moore family is right now or something else that whatever it is you’re doing right now, save more dogs, feed more families, build more houses, and then you want your boardmember to listen to what the donor has to say just stopped talking after you say what your mission is on and listen and hear what they say and make them feel. Good about their gift, saying, you know what? That was a really smart thing for you to dio. How did you know to do that? And now the donor has to go. Well, you know what my advisor told mei or someone in your organization told may or i did it for some other organization ten years ago. So now you have more information from them and that’s. Great. So that gives you an opening to ask them for a gift for this year. Okay. Very simple action. Step from the principle of the plan. Giving agency clear, meyerhoff. Thank you very much. Thank you, tony. Thanks for having me great every month we have you, of course, and we’re talking. Yeah, i’m glad you think so. I do too. We’re getting engaged, getting engaged part for we’re talking about staffing this time. What? What? What is your advice for getting started on figuring out who should be staffing social engagement? Yeah, i mean, i it’s a question that i actually get asked all the time. You know, i think people have gotten somewhat used to at least aware of all the conversations happen about which tools and how you know how some organization is using their facebook page. Or you know how someone has run a contest on twitter that now a lot of the questions are more like so who who will do that who’s actually going to run our contest? Hundred er who’s goingto set up our facebook page and the there is kind of this general sense that because these air, newer tools we should have, you know, those really young people just out of college or, you know, the board members, kid or whatever, you know, they should be the ones doing it, but they’re just so naturally savvy, but at the end of the day, what you’re really saying is, you know, you want those most public, most social, most very personal channels with your donors here, supporters, your longtime activist to be managed by someone that isn’t connected to your mission that isn’t part of your staff that isn’t seen all the other work that you’re doing, because ultimately, that person that’s managing those social channels is also listening and is able to kind of, you know, tie things together across the organization because they could say, hey, it looks like a lot of our facebook fans are talking about this new programme and we haven’t even announced it, you know, on facebook properly, what should we do? They’re clearly excited and can go to those program staff, you know? And if that person that’s that’s managing those channels is really just a volunteer or a new intern or, you know, someone that isn’t fully in the organization, they’re also not in a position to make those connections, nor are, you know, is the organization setting them up to be out there, you know, connecting on behalf of them right now, let’s, let’s think of the smallest organization, maybe really just one or two people, the best they can probably do is hire somebody to be to do this part time, right? So part time would be okay for you. You wouldn’t object to that? No. You know, i don’t actually think i mean, sure, if you have ah, if you have the capacity to have someone managing all of your social activity full time, then you know, i’m not certainly going to say, don’t do that. I think that is terrific, but if you are one of those organizations, you know, you’re one full time person and then a part time person and, you know, you don’t really have a lot of capacity. That’s fine. You can still succeed. You can still valuable have valuable engagement with your community, even if you’re not doing it all day long, but again, it needs to be someone that is sitting in a staff meeting so that, you know, when they start tweeting about that program, they actually know what the program is, you know? Or, you know, conf feedback into what’s going on so it’s less about how much of the time you’re doing it and more that the person who ultimately is out there engaging in posting content is the rest of the time also, you know, involved with that, and that relates teo, a couple things that you and i have talked about in the past first, you know, going back a ways, you know, of course, every charity doesn’t need to be on every social network you use, the ones that are most valuable for you. And, you know, you and i have been through that and use the ones that you are going to be most effective at and have the time for. So, you know, we have to pick these things judiciously. Andi also relates to what you and i talked about last show on talking about engagement, which was december fourteenth that all this needs to be tied to your mission and basically you’re saying today that the person who’s managing this for you also needs to be tied into your mission because they’re actively involved in your office day today or on a part time basis exactly. I mean, when that person, you know, for example, posts on facebook, great, we have this new program and then immediately, you know, people that are in support of it but have questions about a bit are posting those questions on facebook that person can’t just say, well, i was just, you know, my job for today was just a pose, that announcement, you know, they need to be able to get in there like we’ve talked about in in previous shows, you know, tohave that rial time engagement to show publicly that they’re responding to those answers, and the only way they can do that is if they know more about that program than the announcement they were given, you know? Yep, yep. Okay. Now, if we are going to use an intern, i mean, we certainly could plug the intern into the day to day office work the way you’re describing, right? I mean, we wouldn’t want to turn down the intern. We just we wanted going to engage them the way you’re explaining. Yeah, and i, you know, i think that that’s a great point and i definitely agree i think that the question or the potential issue that comes up for organizations that do put some of that social channel management into the interns plate in addition, you know, to knowing about the programs and green involved with the rest of the staff, is that internship by their very nature are normally for a semester, you know? And so at the end of that semester is doing the next intern know what was going on? You know, planning for continuity in that voice online is much harder when you know, every three months there’s a different person behind it. So, you know, i think that’s more of a struggle for organizations than just having, you know, part of a staff person job to be that because there’s a bit more continuity there because that person doesn’t change. I hope that person is not changing out every three months. So part of that khun b documentation and making sure that whoever it is in turn or otherwise, who’s manages managing those channels, you can have some qualitative components to their weekly metrics or whatever they’re tracking that says, hey, i’ve noticed, what can i say? Things like this? I get a better result so that that new person that comes in just three months later doesn’t have to relearn the kind of, you know, words that the community were sandra, or the kinds of words that maybe they shouldn’t use. You know, some of that more qualitative. I’m sensing this there. I’ve noticed this so that it’s maur. Now i don’t want to use the word documented, but it’s well and there’s continuity transparent for other people, okay, yes, yeah, okay, all right, you’re right, important qualification around use of of interns or anybody that’s going to be limited time. You and i have touched on this subject a little bit about policies, but not in a lot of detail. I’m sure there are policies around who owns the account. What types of things are appropriate? Why don’t you help us understand that? Yeah. I mean, i want to start at where we kind of left with the intern conversation. You know, if this is a really small organization, and you’re really just getting started. What happens most often is someone creates, you know, a twitter account, for example, i’m going to excuse myself so say i was a one and a half person organization, we were just getting off the ground, i just wanted to have a way to kind of create buzz and make sure i was listening to the community as we were starting our organization. Your this is your caligari ate my twitter account using my name and because that’s who i am and, you know, we don’t really have a lot figured out just yet, just getting off the ground and time passes, our organization grows, and now it may be a year later and i have staff and the staff are saying, great, we want to set up, you know, a twitter account, but now everyone is just following you as a person, which is fine, but, you know, then you don’t really have the framework remind, you know, in those channels to transition the community very easily and, you know, so i’ve seen organization struggle with that when they get to that point of, like, oh, gosh, everyone’s following this person. But, you know, we want to open the conversation up so it’s not just them, you know, tweeting during the day about work and then tweeting in the evening about the baseball game like, can we? You know, let’s transition to a formal organizational account? But how do we, you know, get those people over here without them just dropping off? So, again, some of that continuity planning has to happen in the beginning where, you know, where do we want to go? How do we want to set up these channels? And part of that is in the policy so that whatever policy you create when you first get started, you know, this is maybe just focused on twitter and facebook, but it’s set up so that, you know, the protocol of grated uses are, you know, funders of our logo and it has a photo of, you know, the staff page, maybe and whatever and that way, anytime in the future, when you add new channels or you want to try out a new channel that’s just, you know, magically appeared on the internet one day staff for you as that hit didi. And the baby can follow the same will know that you’re not setting it up to go in all different directions. So that’s one version of the policy, you know, if you’re a small organization, just setting up accounts at all on the other side of those organizations that have accounts already and have staff that are trying to use them. So what are those policies that support? Like we were talking about the continuity, but then also support staff knowing who uses these channels? Because if they feel like they’re supposed to be using them and they don’t want to, then you just create that animosity of hate twitter and i were apparently all supposed to use it. Normally you’re not awful, steve, you’re just, you know, need to have some resource is internally, so they know great. These are the people that tweet for this program, and this is the person who sends out, you know, the email promotions for this other program, and whenever i have content for them, i can go give it to them. But you’re not saying great now we have the social channels is an organization, and everyone has to use them, okay? Okay, what about let’s go further in these in these policies, working from home you as membership director of inten you do you work from home on ten is very distributed lots of organizations are what about policies around home usage and and using your home hardware? Yeah, so we have organizational policies about the, you know, actual, like computers and phones and printers and stuff that we have in distributed staff home, but when it comes to engaging online, if it can be helpful in a way, because our policies are that, you know, if it’s east coast time and i’m awake, even though i’m not the primary voice on our social channels, i watched that much more closely when i wake up in the morning because i know megan, who does support our social channels who’s in san francisco is not awake yet and because we serve members all across north america and all across the world, really, you know, we want to make sure that not that we’re saying everyone has to be plugged in twenty four seven checking, you know, checking twitter at eight a m on a sunday, but if it is a work day, and i’m already awake and working. I might as well have that window open so that i can make sure someone is being responsive and that you were there to answer questions. And once megan wakes up, we kind of hand the baton across the country, you know? And then she can take take it from there. All right? All right. We have just about, like, a minute and a half left or so how do we how do we predict? Ah, speaking of time, how much time this is going to take for the for the staff person? Yeah, i think that the best is to start small it’s also best, you know, i think we’ve said this on the show before, you know, don’t by listening, you know, service that is thousands of dollars. If you haven’t even started listening to free, you know, via free tools yet or, you know you haven’t investigated what’s even in your google analytics before you go, you know, try and buy some extra tools that the same is true with staffing, i think start small, especially if it is someone that’s already on staff, so you don’t have to go try. And hyre a new person when you don’t yet really know what you’re looking for. So even if it’s just thirty minutes a day, you know, five days a week that’s dedicated to that effort so that whatever staff person it is that’s doing that can can be active can be engaging the community, but can also be saying, hey, i think it really for our organisation and for the amount of community we have, i really think it needs to be two hours a day, and i can’t do that, or i’m fine half an hour a day or, you know, maybe hey, this thing’s full time, i you know, through doing it half an hour a day, i’ve seen all that we have going on, and this is i can help structure that job for this new hyre so i would say start small, even if it’s just thirty minutes to an hour a day with an existing staff person so that you, as an organization can say, great. This is really what we need this job to do because some organizations have, um, a staff person that manages the social channels as well as a program area. Okay, meantime, organizations have them, you know, they’re on the communications team, and they’re often doing some of the email marketing, but then also the social channels and the organization that is dedicated to those online profiles way have to stop. We have to stop there, amy cookie cutter the answer for organizations that they need to try it out internally just to figure out what their need is before they could fill it. My guests are terry billy, assistant director of advancement at the hudson river museum. Wendy adele, executive director of yonkers partners in education, and lisa rob, executive director, the new york council on the arts ladies welcome. Thank you. Thank you. You have all three of you and thank you for taking time on a busy conference day right before lunch on we’re going to get youto lunch. Don’t worry, you won’t be late for lunch. Your subject is working with, uh, boards of small organizations. Lisa, why are boards of small organizations different than boards of larger organizations? Well, normally boards at large organizations that do a fair amount of fund-raising it’s a given and planning and very kind of instrumental involvement with the board, but less so on a volunteer basis or operational basis. Smaller organizations tend to have closer relationships to boards in terms of really what they’re doing for you and it’s also more difficult for them than at large organizations to get some of those things done. So you sometimes encounter at a good small, a good board in a small organization, tremendous work ethics and tremendous alignment with the mission because it is more of a struggle to get to some of the resource is that the larger organization board sort of inherently have. Wendy, why don’t you just set some context? Explain what youngers, partners and education is about what’s your work. We are a public education fund that supports the yonkers public school district for an independent organization that works to increase the number of students in yonkers who graduate from high school and completed postsecondary program. Okay, and now terry what’s, the specific mission of the hudson river museum, the hudson river museum is a history, science and art museum, providing opportunities to brought in the artistic and cultural experiences for people in the hudson river region. Okay, lisa wanted to explain what your work is with counsel in the arts. I’m the new york state counts on the arts is an agency of new york state government, and we work for the governor and receive our money through the budget. Process from the budget enacted every year by the governor and legislature. And we distribute thirty five million dollars of public funds to about fifteen hundred organizations, of which eighty percent have budgets of under seven hundred thousand small organizations. Tony let’s, dispel a myth that you have to be with just a few minutes ago. Boards of small organizations are not necessarily small board know they can range anywhere from thirty five to seventeen or fifteen, usually not less than that. And do we find the same type of diversity on a small organization board that will find in a larger organization board? Yes and no. Sometimes you may have a larger organization may have more corporate people that have connections to larger, mainstream corporations. Then you may have some people that have more connections to private foundations community board sent have a lot more community leaders, people who are connected politically, people who have businesses in the area on dh. Then, of course, you do have people that live in the area that may work for a corporation in a, you know, another capacity. And you also may have some folks that are government based. Okay, so you’ll have that local commitment, as lisa was describing, right? You have a little bit more local commitment. You’re your group may live in the area where your organization is, where a larger organization your your trustees may live elsewhere, right? So so so why don’t we stay with that, terry? What? How can we leverage that? That local nature of the board? Well, you’re trying to first off people become members of your board because they’re interested in what you do, and they want to help it serve your community, the community that they live in. So the urge to be part of something bigger than they are is one of the things that you want to work on. And so then you just need to work and find out what their capacities are, who their contacts are and see whether where their strengths are, too. Have them help you. Okay, twenty let’s start with sort of the chronology of board members life cycle, uh, recruitment. What? What are the challenges and that a small organization faces in recruiting successful boardmember we liked it really? Just talk from how we do it in my organization, but we typically try to identify specific areas of need that we have on our board and some of the gaps of skillsets connections, how people are connected on and we try teo, identify people who can fill those gaps on the board. Sure, and typically, the way we recruit them is through personal relationships. Typically somebody on our board might know of somebody or i might have met somebody, or in some cases, people have even approached us with an interest in the work that we d’oh. And now, since you are a local organization, you’re drawing from a smaller pool of potential talent. That’s correct, but you have the advantage of it being local and again, the commitment that at least talked about that’s. Correct? Okay, okay. Back-up lisa, special challenges of other special challenges around recruitment of boards for small charities that we should talk about. Well, i think one of the things we talked about in our workshop earlier, wass the wendy spoke to it. Well, that sort of a lining, the at a small local level. You may you want to make sure you know really what you want their role to be because they really is a commitment level. And interest level that is often not there. In the larger organizations. People may actually want to do tacit work for you. They may want to make real connections in real time for you, it’s, really not a so, you know, they’re not doing it for source social reasons. So i think, a lining that, you know, the individual in what they want to contribute, and then what the organization needs is even more interesting with smaller organizations. Because there’s more opportunity, i think, to really work with the boards one on one with real goals, that they want it, you know, complete with you, because you’re a small organization, you can actually do that. The goal isn’t a, you know, twenty five million dollars capital campaign, it’s a. You know of of two hundred fifty thousand dollars scholarship campaign, where numbers that become more achievable. But her her one of the point that she made was that very wealthy people shouldn’t be ignored by small organizations. Potential boardmember because it could be bigger. They could be bigger players on a smaller board, of course. Plus you want their expertise, but they could be very interested in a small charity. Good when we actually have a few board members who have been on major major boards, like in new york city. Um who i think have a more gratifying experience. Kind of working on the more local level, rolling up their sleeves, having a direct impact on a cause rather than sitting on a fancy board and going tio three or four meetings a year and about feeling expected to write a check and doing nothing. So i think, that’s, that that’s really the just the distinction, right? Same thing here. My organization has a wide variety of folks in both wealthy and not so wealthy. But people who were really involved and and the smaller organization that’s that’s the reason why they become a member of the of the of the board is to get involved because they have a passion. So, terry, since fund-raising is so important for board members, how do we set the appropriate level of e-giving four boards at small organizations what’s your place there? Some places just give one level of giving for everyone saying, okay, everyone needs to give five thousand dollars or three thousand dollars or ten thousand dollars or whatever it is, but it has to relate to the size of the board’s budget. So for example, my organization does not have a specific geever get, but we expect everyone to participate in the annual fund everyone to give to the gala in some way, shape or form and everyone to give an additional gift of some sort. So you may have some folks that can give twenty five thousand dollars to the gala and then ten thousand to the annual fund and then an additional gift from their private foundation and then other people will, through their company or through there, and a combination of company and the personal money. Give five thousand to the gala, you know, one thousand to the annual fund and, you know, some other money, so it has to be a willingness to accept so it’s a willingness to accept what they khun dio right? Because it’s their capacity so it’s about having a conversation with the boardmember when they’re coming on to understand, to have them understand that there is a responsibility to see support the organization, and then to talk about what level that they’re comfortable giving it. So is that how you assess their capacity? And you’re just really you need to have a conversation what they’re comfortable with, right? Well, i mean, you’ve done the research, you’ve done the research before you brought him in as a trustee to kind of know what they’re pass it e issue done the the prospect research to say, ok, well, this person, you know, has given here there and what have you so you kind of have an idea of what they’re financial level is so then it’s a matter of having a careful conversation with them too say, you know, what is it that you feel comfortable with? And it is, of course. It’s important to set those expectations at the recruitment stage, right. Exactly together. Normally written down. I mean, this is not it’s not uncommon to have written documents that say your contribution will be two hundred fifty dollars. You know that that’s? Not an uncommon. Okay, where you’ll be expected to go to an event or you’ll be expected to cultivate whatever. It’s not uncommon to have those things even written down. It’s. Not like these air secret or uncomfortable conversations. You know, they’re just that’s just part of the business relationship. Most bored people understand they will be a set of contributions they have to make some of which include financial time. Whatever would you would you go so far as to recommend that they be a document that the boardmember signs? Yes. In most cases, there is a is a a a a board agreement. Okay, because liability means you normal. Ok, wendy, partners in education, we don’t have a written agreement, but we haven’t explicit verbal commitment that in most cases has been honored without a problem. Okay, it is not in a contract. All right. How about communications with with a small organization board is that? Is it any i’m guessing easier because most of the people are local? Terry, go ahead. Well, we my ceo communicates with the board on a regular basis. Individually, we have meetings every month, so every other, every was every other know every other month is an executive board meeting. And every other month on the other side is our full board meeting. And then we do not have a board meeting in august. So there’s that then there’s also committee. So we have committees, there’s, a finance committee and development committee, a program committee and nomine nominating committee. And so they usually meet every other month or every two months, three months or something like that. And then we all like i communicate with staff with the board members that i’m working with for a specific project or the, you know, different staff would work directly with the boardmember so it’s, more informal words again, a larger organization with larger, more high level board members, you may not have as much communication access access to them and communication through all your staff with them. It may just be a point to point from your ceo to the board or maybe your ceo, your cfo and your development person, the only people that talk to your board when they were going to say something on communicating for us. I’ve really have kind of individual relationships that the board members. And for the most part, i’d say seventy five percent of them. I have. I’m in communication with on a very regular basis, and you’re the executive director. S, right. Ok, which is, i guess. They’re more accessible to the charity. Also, the board members make themselves more accessible than a larger organization might find. Well, i find ways email, and i mean, i think communication is really easy, you know, whether wherever you live, you could just shoot and email and get a response, but because the board’s pretty active everybody’s working on something so there’s always i mean, it’s not the communication is not for the purpose. So much of updating as it is to kind of do the work, and we work together as you know, collaboratively on you, no specific issues and projects that puts me into direct communication with the board members on a fairly regular basis. So what about switching topics? Labbate hyre assessing the capacity of your board in different capability, different areas, maybe it’s fund-raising maybe it’s love assessing whether you have gaps in expertise? What what’s important? I think, wendy, we’ve all talked about nominating committee’s and what we do, we’re in all the organizations i’ve worked for is the nominating committee is one of the most important committees on any board or the nominating people, and we we do it very almost like database oriented. You know, here the five or six strands of talent that we need, you know, social talent, business, talent, political talent, you know what, marketing, whatever it is, you know, here’s the slots where that is filled now, here’s, what? We’re going to have gaps, we spend a lot of time looking at the term limits, and when people are coming up for renewal too, you know, because gaps will then because you really want to call today, you know, minimally, a year in advance, you want to start your cultivation efforts because you make no assumptions and and also things come up for people, you know, they were interested last year, but this year someone is ill in their family, they’ve gotten a promotion, they’re moving, etcetera, so the nominating committee is very important and to be very strategic about on the goals. I mean, you could have a goal that you have celebrities that’s fine, but, you know, you have to just make sure it’s all you’ve gotten what’s it called a pipeline, you know? So you’re constantly putting names into that pipeline, and your board is very active in that process. Well, they are on their on the nominee they are, the nominating committee rarely includes people from staff in anything other than, like a, you know, did that’s really very much the work of a board there also engaging the full board. Oh, christ, as they identify needs. Oh, you know that it’s talked about usually nominating and issues of bored recruitment are are usually part of certain board meetings. You know, it’ll come up as an agenda item and then there’s the nominating committee, which has, like, you were saying this most of the time, i talked to our board members when i was at pelham art center because they were working board. Wendy so a lot of the communication had to do a task oriented project management, things you were doing together, military. Anything you want to know about assessing the capacity of the board. Okay, what about board training? Any any differences in when a new boardmember comes on any differences that you’ve identified you, emmanuelle for smaller organizations that okay, please go ahead. We have aboard manual that we’ve been evolving our organization’s not quite five years old yet sweeping, evolving that and new board members that come on, get an orientation. They are given emmanuel. And each year we, you know, have ah, two three hour orientation for our new members and that’s how we train them. And there is no big formal training program but it’s more of an orientation to the organization. Ok? And most of them have been to something that we, you know, most of them know us and not where they joined the board. Someone in the other workshop had an interesting idea. She spoke about on their board. They actually had, like, a, you know, in high school or college, the key club where you came in new and someone was aligned to you. They had a senior boardmember each new boardmember that came on, there was a relationship. They were the mentor to that new boardmember i thought that was a really good idea. I thought that was a great idea. What we do is we have a retreat every year once a year. It’s ah, saturday afternoon. And so we are doing both role playing or discussions talking about topics that are of interest, reviewing our strategic plan. So last year at our board retreat, we went through some role playing in how tio make an ask good. Okay, excellent. That kind of leads me to something interesting. I think i hope hyre what about board members who aren’t comfortable asking directly, but maybe can be engaged in other activities around fund-raising why did you continue, terry? Well, some people are very they they feel uncomfortable asking their friends, their family or going to to even business colleagues to set up a meeting for something. Um, and so you need to find different ways for them to to support whether they can host a party of their friends at their home. We’ve done that. Where then you have your museum staff and their friends. They’re so the museum staff could do the cultivation because we’re that’s what we do. S o or you can have them come with you on a site, is it with a funder or a lunch? And they just need to be the intro person and the ask and the program description and all of that comes from the staff people, so they are observing their participating in some way, but they’re also they’re shadowing. They’re learning through it by going through this, you know, site visit or you? Know, observing the ask at a cocktail party or what have you do you find that they become the ones who are reluctant in the beginning? Tio actually ask become more comfortable. Have you seen that? Well, a little bit, yeah, i mean that’s the goal and sometimes it may take a little longer depends on everyone’s personalities different and some people are more comfortable in the limelight and others are not. So you have to kind of work with what they’re willing to do, what their comfort level is and you can’t force someone into something that i want dio that will be a disaster. Forget wendy’s. I don’t think i think something terry set is is really key, and that is, you know, in addition to asking people for money equally is important is is just opening up doors, making introductions and that’s i mean, even for people that don’t like to ask for money making introductions is really important because, you know, particularly if you really believe in the mission of the organization, the organization khun sell itself that’s themselves, that pipeline that lisa mention constantly introducing new people. I know we have a boardmember and you know, one of things i like to do is just kind of focus when i have my board members do. And we have one boardmember who has some really key foundation contacts and his what i asked him to do every years you get me into two foundations and that’s it that’s it that’s your job and that’s huge. That could be hundreds of thousands of dollars. So anything you want and what i do think that friendraising and fund-raising are all part of that same resource development. And as long as you can make sure there’s enough prongs and what you think of resource development there’s no, boardmember that can’t help you if we have to leave it there, ladies. My block this week is charity corporatization re ducks three i’ve blocked this before, as you can tell from the title, and i’m still concerned about blurring lines between charities and corporations. More cities, for instance, are collecting what they call pilots payments in lieu of taxes from charities or they’re considering getting these payments from charities pittsburgh in memphis for most recently and there’s in my block there’s a link to a chronicle of philanthropy article talks about pittsburgh and memphis and a number of other cities that are either collecting those or looking at it. Also, we have corporations starting to look like charity’s, taking some in some of those charity attributes there’s the b corp in california. That’s ah, a form of organisation be corp. For an organization that gives some public benefit as well as having a profit motive. And in a lot of states there are low profit, limited liability corporations also called l three c’s on dh does i put this together with some other data points and just concerns me that the charity start to look like corporations and start getting treated like corporations in terms of those taxes. Very well, good to have you back. Thank you. We’re talking today about c r m constituent relationship management. Why is this important? Well, you know, it’s very important for non-profits to track relationships that they have especially fund-raising purposes, in my opinion, you know, i’m talking more about fund-raising side there as a prospect researcher that you want to be able to see, you know, where our people interconnected you want to be ableto have a certain data point certainly noted in a system that’s going to be able to capture the relevant points of information that are important for your organization and a broader cr m really goes beyond even the donor database. It would be able to track relationships that you have with volunteers with perhaps people that are coming in, uh, to use your organization’s services on a daily basis so it can give you a really broad picture. And, you know, i any any time you can have any type of a tool that shows sort of relationship management for a mapping tool, you know, i’m all for that, okay? And you and i have talked about too, that prospects don’t only come from donors and fund-raising quote fund-raising prospects. But could be employees or vendor’s vendors to the organization or consultants. Right? Right, right. So these are all the types of relationships that you can manage in a system, you know, ideally, you know, a picture scenario where you are a ah non-profit executive at a small commit sides non-profit and you get a phone call and somebody says, you know, hi, this is, you know, tony martignetti i’m looking to talk to you a little bit more and expand on our last conversation. If it’s me calling, you probably should hang up, but it’s using some other example? Yes. You know, you would want to be able to instantly trying to recall well, gee, what? Tony and i last talk about what were the talking points? You know what? What was his area of interest? Right? So ideally, if you’re, you know, at your computer, will you be able to just, you know, put tony’s name in there and pull up some sort of a data sheet on tony said that you’d be able to track what what were our last conversations? And, of course, you know, this is really important. There’s a lot of turnover right at non-profits so, you know, you want to be able to have that that that long term relationship tracked a donor doesn’t care, right? They don’t care that there’s while they developed relationships with key personnel at the non-profit but in terms of the overall longevity and their commitment to that non-profit organization, whomever that executive director development director is, um, he’s probably not as important as the overarching mission and trying to make sure that that there’s that continuity that people will continue to understand what that donor’s intent is what donors specific interest are. Yeah, it becomes quite embarrassing to say, you know, someone who’s new in the position, you know? I don’t i don’t really know what what conversations were before me, you know, it all just needs to be documented. You’re right for the institutional knowledge and continuity, yeah, absolutely, really critical and donorsearch budget organizations are really just using some sort of a spreadsheet right now to manage this, you know, there are systems out there that are fabulous, and they really range in price. Do you want me to talk about a particular guide that can that can help them kind of identify this. And i can actually put some information on on your paige is well about it. Yeah, in just a moment. Let me just get to one of the survey questions that we had about what? What systems people are using now to manage constituent data. Fifty percent of using razor’s edge. And about seventeen percent are using donor perfect and about a third of using other other software systems. But nobody said one of the choices was it’s on paper or in our heads. And so, thankfully, nobody nobody said that. And nobody said excel spreadsheets. Good thing. So all right, so people are past the index cards, at least. Listeners. Well, this is sophisticated audience, so you’re not going to get your average executive director ceo fundraiser listening to this is a sophisticated show, so the sample is skewed. So we’ll presume that there are some who would say it’s on paper in our heads, but they’re not our listeners. They could be were welcomed them, because then after today’s show, they could choose a different answer. Find value. This’s a that’s. Right? Of course. S oh, please. Why don’t you, uh you have an idea if we had just a couple minutes before break, you have ah, a place where people can sort of compare software, is that what you have? Yeah, absolutely. June twenty eleven idealware dot org’s, uh, terrific website for all types of things having to do with technologies for non-profits they came out with a free downloadable guide that’s called the consumer’s guide to low cost donor-centric and they reviewed lots of systems, and then they go into in depth and review sort of their top ten systems and across all kinds of different, uh, data points, you know, they’re reviewing them, of course, for price. And by the way, all assistance they reviewed technically felling under the four thousand dollars range. Okay, so these are not going to be like razors edge is not going to included, right? Razor’s edge is a very high entry cost. Yeah, so i thought, well, with, you know, your your listener audience of the smaller to midsize non-profit that some of their recommendations might actually fit very well for the non-profits they’re looking at, you know, how well can you manage the donor information? The reporting, tracking events, some of the systems khun do that? Well, yeah, because event event attendees that’s another constituency, right? That’s, right? They might attend an event, but they’re not. They’re not donors in the strict out of pocket sense without any other, any participation. So event attendees another important constituency that’s, right? And they are also some of the systems will do male merging very well. Others are not as great at it. Email. How well can the system email out or play? Well with an outside system, for example, i know that there are certain databases that played very well with donorsearch software, like tapestry in constant contact or constant contact in sales force. Dot com they are two systems that integrate very well together. So integration actually is another data point that they looked at. So, you know, i recommend everybody take a look at that particular guide because it’s free it’s downloadable um and idealware is actually having ah, replay on their webinar that they have on that particular topic as well. And i happen to have received an email. Just tweak that they’re having a sale on their recorded webinars. So for this month, only august it appears that they are nine dollars to download the past recorded webinar. Okay, but and the the survey sounds like sort of a consumer reports of of c r e m now does idealware this is important to know his idealware create today of their own software package or now that they’re not in that business there just a value. They’re reviewing it, right? They will value you don’t. Okay, so we’ll put the idealware dot com. But what? What we put oh, dot org’s. Thank you. But why don’t we put the link to the this document? Go on the facebook page and in the linked in group? Sure, i can do that. Okay. Thank you, maria. You’re always very good. And maria is maria doesn’t only say she’s going to do it actually doesn’t. You always have been. Um okay. What? You had a conversation with a ceo of, of of of a newer, newer offering in this field right recently? Well, actually. That’s what prompted me to kind of take a look at their whole cr m area? There’s there’s a very new, interesting software out there. And it’s called unify o you and i f y o dot com. And by the way, it works best on google chrome. So i know that was one of the questions that i made sure that we are listeners answering on since you’re right, but since you just mentioned it, let sze get that question out. It was which internet browser or using it work fifty percent explorer. Fifty percent are chrome, and then a handful of people, i guess, have to and the about a third of those said fire fox so a third of the yeah, about a third of the half what the hell am i talking? About? Fifty percent said explorer, fifty percent said chrome and about seventeen percent said firefox. So obviously summer using multiple systems. That’s what i was trying to convey in the past minute and a half. Okay, so way. Just have a minute before break. So say a little bit more and then we’ll come back. Okay? Sure. So what it is is a technically they call it a browser extension, and if you go to their website, they have a really cool little video. And i can post, uh, on your page is, well, a link to a specific video that talks about how confused for prospect research and that’s what really caught my attention, but basically what they say is that it bridges the gap between you and your c r m so and we’ll give you a little bit more information on that. But it really completes your customer profiles toe all of your cloud applications, so it integrates with several systems already sales force dot com high rise, which is another cr m system that i’m actually not as familiar with, um, and so, since sales force dotcom does have a non-profit maria, we have to take a break hold. Do you know if that’s free? I believe it is. Yeah, i have. Yes, i was approached, i think. But it wasn’t recently by a salesforce dot com representative. I think it is free. Yeah, i believe it is so what’s kind of cool about it is, you know, it had caught my attention was the fact that if i’m assuming now that the sales force dot com tool that non-profits air using would indeed integrate with unify oh, so if we’ve got any sales forthe users out there, i’d love some feedback. You know, through my page or tony’s page to see if it’s working well for you, but basically once you load this unify o icon up into your tool bar so let’s say then you are looking at somebody’s profile in sales force dot com you can click on the little unify. Oh, uh, icon and it will show you other other interactions that have happened with that person, so if that person has been tweeting about your organization or any email communications that have happened, you can manually put in specific notes about a person, so i’m thinking for a really small to midsize non-profit this could be a very interesting solution. Now, this is brand new. Tony okay, yeah, this is brand new, this is you launched may twenty twelve um, i had an opportunity to skype twice with the ceo of this company in recent weeks so i could get a better handle on understanding it and they love feedback. So, maria, it sze pulling in the whole web when you when you identify somebody that you’re you’re interested in? Yeah, well, it integrates best with certain platforms, but yeah, i mean, if you’re browsing and google chrome, so i was right, it has to be it only works in google chrome so far right far only google chrome, but they are looking to develop it for the other platforms as well. And, you know, i just think, it’s something really need to take a look at if if any of our listeners have an opportunity to do so and provide some feedback, they hadn’t created this. For the not non-profit sector originally, so to know that there could be this applique ability because you can have teams of people so let’s say you’ve got the executive director, the development director, maybe a program director and maybe a couple of board members be considered a team. All this data can be shared. So if you and i are on a team, tony and i want to try and figure out what? When were the last communications, it would pull an information about your last email communications okay, and are you testing this unify? Oh, maria, you know, i’ve been playing around with it a little bit, but i don’t have sales force dot com loaded here so that’s, why? I’d love to know somebody who does have it to see how that how, how that could integrate but it pulled in lengthen dad a twitter feed and i think it’s gonna have a lot of applicability it’s free right now, and it won’t stay free forever, so there will be a fee attached to this at some point. But i’ve been told by the ceo they’re going to keep it very affordable for the nonprofit sector. More broadly, when you’re looking at your your cr m software it’s important to know what, what your goals are from your from your system. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, you know, is it’s a system that is only going to be turning out donorsearch ports is this system, as i mentioned earlier, that might have to do mail merges and email marketing? Um, is this a system that is going to be able to help you track, um, interactions, right with those air critical for prospect freak prospect research? Oh, absolutely, absolutely. I mean, you think about all the points on the continuum on the development cycle. So you’ve got the prospect identification and research think about how will it play into cultivation? Solicitation the thank you, the follow-up and the stewardship i c c r m being invaluable not only for me, it’s, a prospect researcher, but certainly in stewarding donor forward. So it should have really flexibility to be able to provide additional notes. I love cloud based systems personally and don’t put me in george in jail. Now, i think the audience knows club. I think scott and i have talked about cloudgood other other other guests have, okay? I think people should know the cloud by now, i’m clear to talk. Wait, we just have about a minute and a half, though. Okay? So any cloud based system, for example, will enable any board members that you give access to the system, say they are very active and cultivating and solicited, soliciting people and meeting with people outside the office. Then they can certainly go ahead and type in notes about those particular meetings. And that again for that continuity is very, very important. Maria simple is the prospect finder. My concern about charities being too much like corporations. And now here we are talking about with marie about salesforce, dot com and unify. Oh, a system that wasn’t developed for charities was developed for companies. I do think there are good practices, great practices. In the in the for-profit corporation sector that charity’s can learn from and vice versa. I think corporations could soften themselves in some ways and learn a lot from charities. It’s the it’s, the so learning from each other, that’s to me, that’s distinct from starting to, um b organized by be regulated by by the other by state and federal overseers as one that you’re really not as as as b corp to start to look like r l three sees the limit for-profit limited liability corporations, i think start toe look at so that’s the start to look like charities that’s the distinction for me between what maria and i were talking about when i blogged about this week my thanks, tio terry, billy, wendy nadella, lisa, rob, of course, and the organizer’s of fund-raising day twenty twelve as well as maria next week grow your grassroots. This is the first of my interviews from the fund-raising day conference hosted by association friendraising professionals new york city chapter just last friday. So this is the first of the ten that i got years. Motivate your board for major e-giving with jennifer herring, welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of fund-raising day two thousand twelve, we’re in the heart of new york city in times square at the marriott marquis. My guest right now is jennifer herring. Jennifer is president and ceo of the maritime aquarium at norwalk, and her topic is major gifts two point oh, straight talk for your board, jennifer. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much, tony. I’m glad to have you on dh. Thank you for taking time in a busy conference day. A pleasure. Why don’t you acquaint listeners with the work of the maritime? Aquarius. Ah, the maritime aquarium is a regional aquarium located in fairfield county, connecticut, that serves primarily connecticut in westchester. But the whole tri state region it’s focused on long island sound. In fact, it’s, the only aquarium focused on long island sound our mission is to inspire people of all ages to appreciate long island sound and protect it for future generations. We have a wonderful collection of long island sound animals and a lot of ability to touch and directly experience animals. It’s a very intimate aquarium. Okay, we also have a very large education program that reaches out primarily to underserved students around the tri state area. And how long have you been there? I’ve been there for going on eight years now as the ceo. Okay, let’s, get into your seminar topic. Major gifts two point oh, straight talk for your board. You’re encouraging gift officers to be change agents around board fund-raising way. We’ll have plenty of time for detail, but generally what’s what’s the problem that you see, i think that the challenge with boards is to keep them engaged. Getting them on the board is on ly step one all fund-raising especially major gifts. Fund-raising is about personal relationships. And just like any friendship, personal relationship needs to be cultivated and maintained on a continuous basis so you can get getting people on the board is the first challenge and talk a little bit. We want we want talk? A little about recruitment will get sacked, right? But once they’re on the board keeping them engaged, challenging them with meaningful ways to be connected with your organization, it’s an ongoing challenge and the strategy behind that is something that the development officers can and should play a significant role in. Okay, let’s, let’s talk a little about the recruitment of board members. How do we make plane? What the fund-raising expectations are at the recruitment stage? I’ve done that for many, many years, no there’s always a conversation, you know, once you’ve i met, the person cultivated the person enough so that your at a position to have a conversation about whether they want to join your board. And of course, that person has to be somebody who’s passionate about your mission and somebody who is going to bring something either some expertise or capacity or preferably or a network of contacts are preferably all three two the nexus of issues that the organization feeling you have ensured that the person you’re recruiting is bringing something, what one one to a little three of those? Absolutely because, of course, the ideal boardmember brings wealth, wisdom and work. And we want to engage all three. So you’re having the conversation and it’s almost always conversation, at least in my current job between me, sometimes with another trustee and the perspective person and i just lay the expectations out on the table. Now we have kind of a sliding scale of expectations, depending on the capacity of the person the board has voted. This is a small organization, it’s, about a ten and a half million dollar budget and how many trustees are there there at the moment? Thirty one that’s large could be that’s a lot that’s. A lot of trustees, partly because in a cultural institution, being on the board or on a committee of the board is the only way you have a connection there. No grateful patients. There are no alumni. You have to create a connection and keep it going. Okay, and the board is a very important way to do that. So getting back to the recruitment conversation, i always put a specific number on the table. Um, and it can be as little as the minimum annual gift that the board has voted. Should be the minimum, which is twenty, five hundred. Dollars uh huh. Often i will say site a larger annual gift if i know the person has more capacity plus either giving ah, e-giving or selling a table to the gala. And then we’ve been in a campaign mullet for the last five years. I usually say, you know, once you’ve gotten involved in and been a member and really gotten connected, we will be coming to talk to you about a major giff ok? And the first number that’s an annual number that’s an annual number. Okay, so you’re very clear about the expectations, do you? Do you do this in writing and let the person take it home to take it to the office and considerate or this is really all verbal well, what we give them in writing, we don’t give them the expectation and writing, okay, we give them the role of the board. You know what? What our expectations of them are in terms of their responsibilities and what they can expect of us in terms of response. Civilities, we give them a lot of background material about the organization would let them see who they’re colleagues on the board would baby give them. Aboard list, but we don’t have, you know, a pledge form that they have to sign beforehand. We figured that the verbal conversation is enough, and then we solicit them ah, at the at year end or calendar, you’re a fiscal year, and we have a june thirtieth fiscal year for what we’ve talked about. All right, now you have a new boardmember they’ve they’ve accepted based on the expectations, what is ah, board training look like for brand new board members around? Fund-raising well, we don’t have a really formal training for us it’s on the job, maybe they go on other calls, outgoing calls with others or what we mostly do. We have a pretty elaborate committee structure, one of which is this is a campaign committee, but a marketing committee of finance committee, education committee and exhibits committee, so we use those committees to get them connected with the meat and the program of the organization we use the gala committee very actively to engage people in soliciting tables for the gala. That’s in some ways, the easiest kind of fund-raising to do because it’s very transactional, then there’s a a certain small kadre of leadership volunteers. Who have made major gif ts and who are in powerful positions in the board that i work with personally to develop specific ask strategies that they participate in to go on called fund-raising calls with terrorism that’s sort of on the job it’s on me. Okay, so it’s on the job training because i’ve i’ve found i’ve worked it now for non-profits and i in none of them has there ever been, you know, you get the whole board together and you have a little fund-raising training thing. We tried to do that, actually on a retreat in two thousand eight, the week that the stock market was falling apart when we were about to launch our campaign and had a little role playing about how you ask, but that contrived, right? So everybody knew everybody knew was staged its quite trust, and i found that it’s much better to work directly with the person who’s agreed to go on a call with you, and what i do is write a script for that person, and i do it for myself too about you know what the objective is, how much we’re going to ask for what the background. Is the, you know, the background, research, the relationship with the person to the organization, and then what each of us is going to say, e-giving lending, e-giving e-giving, ding, ding, ding, ding! Big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent. Yeah, so you actually rehearse since you have a school to do, you practise the meeting in advance? Well, i practice myself. I mean, i sit in my office and speak the script, and i often will have a telephone call with the person who’s going with nato to go over it, and they used these scripts. They work really well to shape the the conversation and, you know, it’s sort of various whose mouth, the actual ask is going to come out of it most often comes out of my mouth even if we’re going with a peer, but it doesn’t matter, really, because the presence of the pier there makes all the difference. And why don’t you say a word about that? For people who may not recognise what what’s the value of having is someone someone alongside with you, who’s a a peer of the of the person you’re soliciting. So having somebody who’s involved who’s already made a major her gift who’s giving their time and and treasure to the organization validates the organization for the person that you’re asking the money for and sets a bar down four for what they’re doing, especially if it’s a trustee because the trustees are supposed to be the ones who care the most were the most invested and therefore need to be the biggest investors in the organization. That somebody on the outside of the organization is always looking. Two how much trustees were doing and how much in particular that trustee who’s asking has done to help scale their level of gift thinking. So so here’s an example. Actually, this isn’t a trustee is somebody whose son is a trustee. And who i’ve tried to get a trust to be a trustee for years has taken on the project of raising money for a new research vessel, which is a two and a half million dollar project. He’s in the shipping industry. He’s. Very passionate about it. He cochairs the committee he brought in the person who’s. Um, project managing the project. Who’s built many boats. He helped move us to the decision away from retrofitting an old boat to building a new boat from scratch. He agreed to raise the money. He gave a half million dollars lead gift. And i took him to see ah, prospect that’s been in our family at about the ten. Thousand dollar level for a number of years. Who we honored it, our gala, who we’ve cultivated pretty thoroughly and whose connection to the aquarium was around our existing research vessel. So we went and sat with him right before christmas in their kitchen. Sam uh, the gentleman who’s leading this project talked about it very passionately talked about what he’s done, and that is instance, the actual ask came out of my mouth. We left them with materials. But then the leader that the head of this effort played golf with the prospect in florida continue to cultivate him on his own separately from anything that the institution was doing. And this gentleman stepped up with a half million dollar gift, matching the lead gift for matching the lead gift. So it was a long cultivation effort, probably going on for five years before we got to the critical moment where we found the right project that connected to this person’s passion. And i’m sure that the fact that he was being solicited by somebody else who had made a gift at that level was one of the things that determined no, his i mean, this is somebody with a lot of capacity. Who’s named things all over town. This also speaks to the value of the long term relationships that you mentioned now that may not have been a long term relationship, but it was the beginning of it was the beginning of a relationship between those between those two between those two. Absolutely and and there is the long term relationship with the institution. Find this gentleman the person who made the five hundred thousand dollar gift had been involved with the institution for at least five years. But between these two people, right, a developing relationship, correct? See each other’s piers on dh makes it tougher for the person solicited to refuse. The other thing usually is that when you’re going to have a solicitation call, the person that you’re soliciting knows why you’re coming to see that it’s not a surprise way don’t want toby blindsiding people you want them to know, right? I mean, you basically set up the meeting in a way that says, i want to come and talk to about this project for this campaign or so that they know what it is and if they don’t want to be solicited. They won’t take the meeting mostly right? Let’s talk about the role of the professional fundraiser in supporting lord fund-raising what do you see as the the role? Well acquaint people with the structure at the aquarium? Do you have? Ah, vice president, director development? Yes, there are some gift officers or we have it, but we have a very small development, as we have in highly experienced director development who’s been doing university development, heading university development departments for thirty years. We have a person who does foundations and ah latto the patron program and various other many aspects of fund-raising is sort of the director of the annual fund, but he’s also doing major gift so it’s not very good at everything that it is typical of a small shop. We have a person who does the gallas and corporate fund-raising we have a person who does membership and the acknowledgment of gif ts and some fulfillment of patron level gift, which is a thousand dollars for us, we don’t have very many patrons and and that person has an assistant so it’s basically five, five people in there, other things that are being done out of this. Opponent who eyes the liaison to the board for fund-raising assume it’s, the it’s, the director of development and to some degree that the person who manages the gala because the board is so involved in the gala so and and also the personal i would say that there are three of our gift officers that that have relationships, not with every boardmember but with some board members, and then since you’re giving your your topic is major gift, right, what’s, the what’s, the support that the director development probably is the one providing to the to the board around around major, gifted director, director of development it’s mostly providing support to me around major gift activities and that’s possibly because i have such a strong fund-raising background was the ceo. I mean, that’s what i’ve been my career has been for thirty years, so we talk about strategy. He identifies prospects, does the research. He does a lot of personal cultivation with these people, too. So he makes friends with them. He talks about his travels there, travels. He fixed us up with theater tickets. He does things that just brings them closer to the organization. He’s very active. In working with the board on small, intimate cultivation dinners, that’s something you ask board members to do? We asked members events and not in the way host them right in front of our biggest exhibit, which is a shark tank. So you’re you’re having dinner with the sharks swimming around in this elegant table. There’s, you know, a maximum of twenty of you there’s, some interesting intellectual guest, either professor from yale or the principle of our partner school that’s closing the achievement gap or somebody like that, you’re there with a bunch of peers that the board members bring to the table and that’s part of the cultivation effort that’s proven very successful and really important in moving people into major gift relationships with us. What do we do with or four board members who have a reluctance to do fund-raising now, even at the so even going back to the er, teo bringing them on, bring them on the board, the recruitment if they express our reluctance, they have skills that you need and they’re willing to do their own giving maybe a maybe a much higher level than the twenty five dollar minimum, but they have a reluctance to do to be asking people for money, what can they be doing around fund-raising we just don’t bother with them because we don’t have time, frankly, so you wouldn’t accept that kind of a boardmember no, no, we just leave them alone to what they’re doing, okay? And don’t try to make them do something they can’t d’oh. But even if they can’t ask there not comfortable asking, they could, for instance, host the hosting events so that’s were constantly, uh, trying to get people to bring their friends to our events to our friends of his are exhibit openings introduced people to us, and every year when we have aboard retreat, they all the people there pledged that they will do that and every year on ly a few of them do it word definitely working very hard to get boardmember sze to agree to host or co host thies, small dinners are shark tank dinners and bring with its great they’re called struck thank dinner. Yes. Oh, isn’t that great? I just read something online that if there was one drop of blood in one million drops of blood or something like that, sort of sense that consensus was that on npr’s website or something it could be but that’s something that that one of our education programs that demonstrates two kids very interesting how they do it with a little drop of tomato juice, being deluded and deluded and deluded, and and they figure out when they can taste it and okay, yeah, so your shark tank dinners so we’re constantly trying to get boardmember is to bring their peers to shark tank dinners, which is very difficult to do, and only a few of them are really able tto leverage those kinds of relationships. It’s, you know, we have in some ways a naive for this is not new york city, and this is not new york city fund-raising with the kind of power boards that i’ve worked with at the new york public library and the wildlife conservation society it’s a very different kind of bored, maybe many of these people are being our board members for the first time, some of them are, you know, business people may be in the upper middle management of the bank, and there they don’t have that kind of reach into rich people community that um, that is common in new york. On the other hand, fairfield county has a huge amount of hedge fund wealth and a huge amount of maritime wealth, although in this economy, that’s less than it, wass. And we’re getting more and more of those kinds of people on our board who do have a network and are able to to bring us at least to get this us in a room with them. Okay, then the challenge becomes how two convince the sector. That is more and more about venture philanthropy that has measurable impact. That there’s something for them at the maritime aquarium? Yeah, on dh. Well, we want to stick to the board fund-raising topic, but i know that impact and outcome assessment is very here for lots of charities. And yes, it is a struggle for cultural institutions to do that. Although it sounds like maybe around your education in this job we do. We are able to do that around our education on shifts and initiatives in some very interesting ways about closing the achievement gap, and one of our trustees made a very strategic a gift to us that allowed us to do a case study about a partner school that we’re working with and what impact our partnership has had in their achievement there. Rising achievement of school that’s almost all inner city kids. Jennifer way have just about a minute left. And i want to talk a little about the case for support on dh analyzing that case for support again in just a minute. So what’s your advice around scrutinising that you need a strong case for support. You need your board to be able to deliver it in an elevator speech s so that they can be great ambassadors for you. The case for support is what’s going to make people give? They have to understand that you have to teach them through your case for support that you are an institution that can help them change the world, that they can change the world through your institution, and get the joy and satisfaction of doing that through their philanthropy. The the elevator speech for board members, do you help them write it? First? Talk about what we have definitely done that, and we’ve done it in various ways. The elevator speech should have a certain set of statistics, and i’ve actually gone so far as to take a business card and write him out that they can keep in their pocket this citizen. But the elevator speech also has to connect to the passions of the boardmember so that they can talk about the institution in a way that that communicates the passion that they bring to it. So every boardmember doesn’t have the same elevators, no every boardmember doesn’t and shouldn’t have the same elevator speech. Excellent advice. Ok, it goes to what? What? What moves them the most. Time for tony’s, take two on tony martignetti non-profit radio my block this week is nearly one thousand new york city charities lose tax exemption the new york city department of finance ah revoked the property tax exemption from nine hundred twenty five city based charities because they failed to demonstrate a legitimate charitable purpose. They lost their property exemption for what? For property that they owned. And, as i say in the blogged, something similar to that was reported in the new york times last year and and the block post has a link to that coverage, i think the lessons for charities are you need to stay true to the charitable mission that got you. The irs is designation of tax exempt however, many years ago that was and in the case of one of the charity’s sighted, but you’ll see in the blogged from new york city, that was nineteen, thirty four and but now, obviously, new york city is challenging that. So you need to stay true to that charitable mission that got you that original tax exempt designation and i think, also need to stay in compliance with state and local regulations. And laws because i could see compliance being linked to keeping your tax advantage at the state and local level. And that’s all we’re talking about. We’re not talking about federal tax exemption. These were ah, this is all state and local tax advantages also want to remind you well, that’s on the block and my blog’s is that tony martignetti dot com and that’s, this week’s post. How is that possible, maria? Simple. I know your air right in here. Hello, maria. Simple. How are you? I’m doing well. Maria is the prospect finder she’s, an experienced trainer and speaker on prospect research. Her website is the prospect finder dot com. Her book is panning for gold. Find your best donor prospects now and most importantly, she’s, our regular prospect research contributor, and this month we’re revisiting the twenty twelve prospect plan maria from the january sixth show. You had some ideas back then, i did absolutely so i came up with kind of a list of things that people could do, and i thought i’d be a good idea to revisit it now that we are hard to believe midpoint in the year of twenty twelve already, i know, um, so not to revisit the entire show, but some of the tips that we had, we brought to the table at that point we were talking about, you know, prospecting from within your database in-kind of mining that database and tips for how you can keep up with some of your top prospects. But we also talked about proactively identifying people outside the database and bringing them into your organization to learn more about your missions and by hosting by hosting some cultivation events, right? Right. So we did, you know, talk about cultivation events. My suggestion had been to in the first three months of the year, really trying to identify people from within the database and proactively identified people outside your database that you might invite some cultivation events and then try and hold those events in second quarter. So let let’s assume that people may have taken our advice hosted one or two cultivation events, but if not, we have some lessons or we have some ideas to get started. The year’s not over and it’s only half. So you can still, you know, implement all of these and just think about shifting the tips into the second half of the year. That’s even we have even more than half. This is only the twenty fourth. So twenty four, twenty four, fifty seconds have passed. So what is that? Twelve. Twenty six and then it goes down even further. Teo six, six, eighth goes from all right. Well, you have more than half the year left. Yeah, just a little over half the year. So all is not lost. But anyway, let’s, let’s talk about some of those. Those tips that we talked about, we mentioned identifying maybe the within your database. Who were those top ten to twenty gifts that you’d received in the past year. And also your top ten prospects in terms of lifetime giving to your organization and, you know, inviting those people to attend a cultivation event. Now, you know, sometimes people refer to these parlor event. You know, whatever terminology want to use, the event can be held at your facility. If you have a facility you want to showcase or outside in somebody’s home. So in particular, if you have somebody you’re affiliated with with your board or another volunteer who’s willing to open up their home, particularly if they have a lovely home. And really, the setting would work very nicely for us. A small, intimate gathering. The key to remember here, there’s no. Ask at that. You know, that could also be on site. You might have. You might have a very interesting place for people to gather on site i in the interview that everybody heard earlier in the show. Jennifer herring is president of the maritime aquarium at norwalk in connecticut. And they like to host things in front of the shark tank. Right? So it could be a small gathering. If you have a small shark or maybe have a gecko or, you know a hamster, you could host a small group in front of a little aquarium. With, you know, eight or twelve people watching the hamster go around in a wheel, i mean, that could be compelling. Yeah, certainly if you have a facility that lend itself well to that type of gathering that’s great. I attended something recently at the liberty science center here in jersey city in new jersey, and it was a fabulous event, and so, you know, just get creative and think about what would draw people in. Is it the space? Is that this person’s home on dh? The key is to really be able teo stick to the time frame that you tell people it will be, particularly if you’re going to do it around some sort of a breakfast event, people need to get on with their day, be a little bit more lax if it’s an end of the day event, but from a prospecting or prospect research point of view you want to think about while you’re attending that event, listening for, you know, some of the general interests now, you know, i’m assuming that a lot of the people that are listening to this show may be from a smaller to midsize non-profit so the person taking on the role of prospect researcher is either the executive director is the development director, maybe a communications director. Whoever that person is that also does some prospect research at the organization should be in attendance at this event with the so purpose, really, to do a little bit of intelligence gathering. Yeah, you want to be you want to be making sure that people are that staff, if you do have multiple staff, you don’t want them huddled together over in the sort of the room, even if it’s just two or three of you, you know, huddled in a corner, chatting or all seated at the same table if there are multiple tables, that’s, a that’s, a big mistake, you’re not you’re not going to be out talking to people as much as you could be, right? So this is an opportunity for you to showcase your non-profit but also to elicit a lot of wonderful information that, quite frankly, a lot of instances you may just not be able to find this information online. So so what type of information might that be that you’d want to elicit as wearing your prospect? Just general interest just engaged the person in conversation on and be a good listener that is just so very keys just to really put your listening ears on. And we’ve talked about we have talked about that in the past. Thie radical listening, which came from a previous guest. Melanie schnoll begun. And then you picked up on radical listening and recommended it as prospect research vehicle. Right? Total cultivation event is a great place for you to become a radical listener. So gent general interests that they have any family information that you khun gather sometimes there might be information about children, ages of children just to get kind of get an idea of where they are, what point in their lives that they’re at. Um, are they you know, more of a plan giving prospect for you? Are they really just starting out in their lives, their careers, and have very young children? Just you want to be genuinely interested in in their lives? S and and what? What it is about your work that appeals to them, right? And one way to find out about that is, well, obviously to directly ask them. But it’s also interesting to try and gather where else? They’re volunteering their time. You know what other charities air they particularly interested in so that you can try and figure out? Well, gee, just, you know, the programming and then services that we offer does it a line at all with what this family has in terms of their general charitable interest. So in the case of the maritime museum, they might be thinking about, you know, china, find out what you nowhere else these people are are spending their time. Are they interested in other maybe water conservation efforts, other charities that really address water quality in the long island sound? You know, things of that nature, and so for sure, you’ll know that you’re on the right track and engaging this person in additional conversation. So, you know, that might be a great way to find out where they and their spouse volunteered their time also vacationing. You know, this is a great opportunity for you to say so, you know, do you have any exciting vacation plans for this summer? Uh, so, you know, be listening for responses like, yeah, we’ll be spending, you know, the entire month of august in our home. In the hamptons, you know, they say that nature good to know just just generally find out what type if they say no, we’re doing this stay cation thing this year, you know, pick up on that cue, um, and then really, really important the circles back to something we talked about in the january show is to be able to really create some sort of contact reports on capturing critical information that you’ve been able to glean from the, uh, from the cultivation events. Right now, we have a great dahna database right now, back in january, we talked about we encouraged i think it was the eleven percent that didn’t have a computer database to look at the clouds packages that available, and you went into detail and on that in the january six show, so hopefully some of those people have converted teo computer databases, right? And if they’re still in there, sort of in the shopping phase, i’ll just remind them real quickly that the two websites that that might be something for them to check out that might give them some additional info on what’s available out there. Idealware dot or ge talked had a kn article about how to select a database and tech soup dot or ge is a good place to find some low cost and free tech advice. So, you know, check those out if you’re still in shopping mode. Andi, i you know, i truly believe that cloud based is the way to go it’s just going to give your staff and your board the most flexibility on dh then your point about saving that valuable information that you that you learn at a cultivation event in that computer database or if you’re not computerized yet, i guess you know, you you print up a contact report and put it in a person’s folder, right? Exactly and, you know, it’s really important, like, just just like you don’t want that staff to be all congregating together in the corner, it’s going to be very important after the event post event very quickly thereafter within a day or two to have a debriefing if it’s not a meeting, get a conference call going, you know, there’s free conference services out there there’s no reason why you can’t just say, you know, knowing in advance the date of the event, let’s say it’s a thursday evening by by friday midday, you could be having a conference call in have that scheduled way in advance that you’re going to have a debriefing call, you know what were the important point? Somebody found out from speaking with some of the people, and you may want to actually pre-tax fine people, right? So if we know in advance that mr big bucks is going to be there, why not do a little pre advanced research on him and find out a little bit of information? And so that a boardmember can be assigned to perhaps be the person to you know, just have a discussion and you can even try and figure out who the best four person would be, that you’d want to make sure cultivating that individual during the way we’re going to take a break. I want to emphasize before we do one thing that you said, which is in terms of inviting people, look a tte donors who have give been giving for the lifetime large donors over their lifetime, so individual gifts may not be so large, but they’re giving history over the life over their lifetime with your organization. Hi there and welcome back we’re revisiting your twenty twelve prospect plan with maria simple maria just teo wrap up that topic on cultivation events. Was there anything more you wanted to say about that before we get to one of the other topics from from january? I would say in terms of pre imposed cultivation event, there are a couple of websites that you might want a bookmark to be able to do some of that general research on an individual that might be attending or might have attended anay event. I outlined some of these in the going beyond google article that i have on my website, and maybe what i ll do, tony is at after the show go ahead into your lincoln page as well as your lincoln group as well as your facebook group on dh post there about what where they confine that exactly, but it’s a suspect finder, dot com and it’s on the resource is paige, so some of those things that you can do is obviously run the person’s name through google. Now the big tip with google is that you want to put quotation marks around a person’s name, so that you’re finding their name as a phrase in google if is so, certainly you could do that. You can set up a google alerts again on the top ten donors we had recommended back in january that you look at the top donors that you have in your database and set up an alert on their name that’s free google will push the information to you so you could find out if something new is happening, especially in somebody’s business career. Now, last time we talked about alerts, i think you had set one on me or we talk about something and you used me as an example. I was lousy results was a wealth indicator. Was that that wealth indicator? What? What, you know, what’s interesting about setting up. Stop using me as an example, right? Google and google alerts is if you google plus now is actually influencing, and we talked about that on one of your shows it’s influencing your search results. So if you are on google plus and you are logged into google, the results are actually going to be skewed more toward social results. So if you’re doing this purely as a prospect researcher. You may want to actually log out of google. Um, your google plus account before commencing your prospect research. Just a tip. I think you might get a little bit more of objective results, if you will. It’s not gonna be so much skewed toward just social sector social media here. And you had you had examples on of other alerts that that people could set beyond the free google lorts, which are which are outstanding. I use them a lot for for my work, right? But you had some examples of others specific newspaper alerts. A lot of the newspapers out there permit used to set up alerts on specific phrases. If you and also the news sources in your state here i track in new jersey, i track and jay is, uh, they send me daily alert just generally what’s going on in the business community. I get those alerts twice a day here in new jersey. So that’s, something you want to consider looking into. What is that publication that covers your state? It might present from interesting opportunities for you because they tend to not only highlight, you know, negative news that’s going on, but also some real positive news and then one of the fee based services that some of your listeners maybe currently scribed, too, for doing foundation research is called foundation search dot com and as paid subscriber, one of the things that you have access to is a new foundation alert service. So if you are subscribed to that service, definitely set up the alert for yourself. They’ll let you know anytime a new foundation is formed on registered with the irs in your state or whatever states you decide to set up, as you know, the alert service and you will be pushed the information through email, then you can check it out a little bit further waken set these alerts up not only for individuals but companies and foundations. That’s, right? Yeah, you can definitely do that as well. Cos and foundations, you want to set up those alert so, you know, whatever it is that you’re looking to track for certain, you want to set up the alert there? Um, lincoln is a great place to research. Somebody pretty opposed an event. Also, they have free alerts that you can set up within lincoln. So let’s say you’re always, you know, prospecting for somebody who holds specific in a certain industry. Let’s say the accounting industry or something like that. Ah, and you want to always be notified anytime somebody new joins lincoln who’s in the accounting field and also happens to be within a certain radius of your zip code, you can set those types of alerts up up to three of them, actually under a free lengthen account to take advantage of that. And have lincoln pushed the information to you, maria, is that using the advanced search? Yeah, yeah. You can do with the advanced search page just to do the search initially and then? Ah, once you set those, you see the search results, you can actually save that search and you’re allowed to save up to three searches. Particularly useful. Okay. Okay, so the cultivation events, the alerts i’ve calculated now the year is six thirteen ths of the way through. So you have you have seven thirteenth remaining to take advantage of these ideas that maria originally recommended back in january. But don’t feel bad, maria. We have just about thirty seconds left. What do you want to leave people with in? This mid year checking this revisiting of the prospect plan i think it’s really just the idea of getting proactive on dh getting their delve into your database proactively trying mine it proactively look for people who are outside of the database that you need to bring in and learn about your organization and really help them stored them along said that they will feed knew names into your organization and be willing to host their own cultivation event. Rob has twenty nine years working in and around non-profits as a fundraiser and executive and also a consultant, he is, as i said, ceo of atlas, of giving atlas e-giving measures analyzes and forecasts us charitable, giving monthly by sector source and state. I’m very pleased that his work brings him to the show. Robert, you’re welcome. Thanks. Tony is good to be with you. It’s. A pleasure to have you, um, tell us about the atlas of giving methodology to do these look backs and also predictions of charitable giving. I’ll be happy to the atlas of giving started. Actually, when i was a practitioner, i was chief development officer of the american cancer. So society i was named in that position in june of two thousand won our fiscal year started at the society in september one and then september eleventh the world changed for all of us. Our ceo called me that day and asked me what this meant for giving at the american cancer society acid john i couldn’t possibly know, but they can’t be good, and i’m just not sure how bad it’s going to be or how long it’s going to last. A year later, we felt very pleased that we had finished a bubble of flat, and when describing our success to our board, one of the board members said, well, how do you know you did so well? And we had information from a handful of other charitable organizations nationwide charity organizations, i mentioned those in a the boardmember said, well, that’s, just anecdotal information, isn’t there a benchmark that you can compare our results too? Well, the truth is that a benchmark existed, but it was only annual and it only came out six. It only comes out six months after the calendar year ends. You’re referring to giving yusa yes, i am. So that conversation bothered me, and then this boardmember followed up with me later and said, you know, it strikes me that charitable giving is tied to certain factors in the economy, and if you can figure out what those factors are, you might be able to measure charitable giving on a more timely basis so way initially, while i was still at the society. I had my research team there look into this and other things took priority. Bottom line is we didn’t we didn’t have the time or the energy to pursue it very long moved on to other things. I left this when i left the society in two thousand nine. This was one of the things that was troubling me that i really wanted to get a direct answer to i stayed with you thie idea stayed with you for eight years. It did it did. And so, um, my, uh, we started a company called philanthropy max, and one of the first things that my business partner and i decided to do was to pursue this. So we hired a team of twenty five phd level researchers and analyst and we gave them some variables to look at. They added to the list, the list they looked at was over seventy different economic and demographic variables and and forty two years of published annual e-giving data um, so that’s what they had to work with, they came back a few weeks later, and they said, well, this is remarkable. We have identified what factors are involved what? What economic and demographic factors are involved with us charitable giving. And we’ve developed an algorithm and we check our algorithm against forty two years of published data. We have a correlation rate of ninety nine and a half percent. And the good thing, tony, was that those out of those seventy variables that we started with it boiled down to just a handful and those air variables that are reported monthly or quarterly. So we had a way finally to measure charitable giving as it occurs in the united states. But that was aggregate giving, and that was we started giving away the atlas of e-giving in two thousand ten, and it was just the the national number, the aggregate national number. But we did it on a monthly basis. And by the way, we were also able to create a forecast based on those variables and the formula that we developed. But we wanted to go further. We wanted to have information monthly on sectors so arts, education, religion so forth, their eight different sectors and sources, individuals, foundations, corporations and the quest. And then we also really wanted to add to it states so we sent the research team that assignment, and they came back a few weeks later, and we were able to crack the code all with, uh, what we call up, um, correlation percentages well above ninety percent for everything and most cases well above ninety five percent. So a sense. So essentially, what we have is the ability to measure charitable giving as it occurs in the u s by sector source and stayed on a monthly basis and then forecast to up up to a year in advance. All right, we’re going to take a break, and when we come back, we want to talk about some of these variables that are in there, and i don’t know if we can get you to reveal the number fromthe seventy, but we’ll see how far we can go. And then, of course, we do want to talk about what e-giving look like last year and what it’s ah forecast to look like this year. So rob mitchell will join me after the break. Duitz welcome back. We are looking at giving two thousand eleven in two thousand twelve with rob mitchell, the ceo of atlas, of giving rob, what are some of the factors that were identified from these this big group of seventy before i get into specifics? One thing i will tell you, tony, is that the economic and demographic factors that affect one part of giving aren’t not the same ones that affect other parts of e-giving ok, things like gifts from individuals, uh, have a have a different set of factors than then gifts from corporations. The formula for the education sector is very different from the formula for the art sector. So the sum of the eiken without giving away any secrets. Sausage, everybody. I think everybody for years has understood that there is a relation. There has been a relationship between gross domestic product in the us and charitable giving their other factors that that are involved in different things, and they involve everything from stock prices, toe home prices to earnings to consumer confidence. There there there are a lot of different there are many different factors, but interestingly free sector for each source for each state. The number of factors affecting those various things are actually a pretty small. They’re different from sector to sector source to sort the source, the source and state to state. But each one of those the formula, the factors involved in each of those individual formulas is a pretty small number. And so now are your algorithms, um, patented is that is that appropriate to patent something like this way thought so and way. Obviously, when we crack the code, we rushed right down to a patent lawyer. And the long and the short of it was, he said, your coca cola and we said, what does that exactly mean? And he said, well, if you if you publish, if you if you patent something, it has to be published and even in the application process there’s some things which are revealed. And he said that would give it away. So coca cola, believe it or not, has never patented their formula for coca cola over the years. So, uh, on legal advice, we were advised that in this case, for this particular type type of formula, it would not be wise for us to patent it. And you had an honest attorney who said you don’t need my help, pretty much ok, i love that alright, so that’s let’s dive into some of these numbers overall? What? What are the conclusions from two thousand eleven? And then we’ll look, you know, we look at some specifics, but generally, well, i think the biggest story for two thousand eleven is that we experienced a real resurgence in giving in two thousand eleven, and the resurgence wass far outpaced the growth in the economy. This is one of those years where the folks who have tried to make strong correlations between gdpr charitable giving are going to be a little off quit because e-giving grew and two thousand eleven, two, three hundred forty’s over three hundred forty six billion dollars that’s a seven and a half percent increase over the two thousand ten number. Now, when you consider the fact that and the final numbers, they’re not in on gdpr for for two thousand eleven, but when they do come in, they’re going to be some where it’ll be probably in a range of between one and a half and one point eight percent growth in gdp, so you can see the charitable giving really did well, and there were some there was some important reasons for that. Okay, well, um let’s hold off on some of the reasons, i think because i want to get into some more of the conclusions and but before we do that, even what i think is kind of exciting is we don’t have to wait six months from the end of the year for for the giving us a report to come out. No, the in fact, the report is posted on our alice e-giving website right now. So, um, we have we have we offer three products. The first one is called out with standard and it is available for free with a subscription. And then we have atlas, professional and that’s everything monthly by sector sources state. Then we have we have something called atlas custom. Our technology enables us to build custom benchmarking and predictive models for individual non-profits to identify what particular economic and demographic factors effect they’re giving. But because your methodology is so much different than e-giving yusa, which is based on surveys, we have something much quicker than then. June, i guess, is when that typically comes. Out yes and way think are we think our technology has other advantages as well? There are other than giving us say, there are other indexes and surveys and blackbaud has won, yeah, and most of those air based on, um, a group of customers that sort of fit a profile, and they’re not necessarily representative of all sectors for of very small charities or very large charities. Um, the survey kind of methodology is important, and i don’t i don’t want to diminish the fact that surveys air important, but there are things related to my background which i know happen in the survey process, which can be troubling over time. And when i was at the american cancer society, just as an example, as a matter of board policy, we we did not disclose our e-giving information on a contemporary basis. Of course, we filed the nine nineties and those sorts of things did annual reports, but in terms for competitive reasons are bored felt like it was it was important for us not to participate in those kinds of survey let’s. Look let’s, look at the prediction for two thousand twelve you’re predicting ah, just under four. Percent growth yes, the current forecast is two thousand twelve will finish the year with with about three hundred and sixty billion dollars in total e-giving and that would be a three point nine percent increase over two thousand eleven. But like any forecast, and we update our forecasts each month, right? So as these as the as the factors or the are reported each month, because you’re basing them on government supply data, then you you change your your forecast for each month. Well, and there are other things that happened as well, okay, look like thousand won is a great example. Two thousand one was was a very good giving year for most organizations until september eleven things changed dramatically after that. So you’re able to factor in world events like that, i guess world events, whether yeah, and whether they’re man made or natural disasters, tax policy changes, changes in government, all kinds of things, um, those things are all taken to account, so in terms of the forecast we updated each month, and so if we get it just as an example, if we get a severe weather event of some of some kind, that the severe natural disaster. Say an earthquake in someplace. Hey, that’s going to be good? It could be overall, actually good for the charitable giving economy, depending on what kind of event it is. Because people there’s an outpouring, obviously. And things like the indonesian tsunami and the haitian earthquake. Sure, there was a huge outpouring. But the thing to remember is that the charitable giving economy is complex, and so, um and and it’s somewhat defined so that disaster relief organizations benefit uh, a great deal during times of the those kinds of disasters. But that money has to come from somewhere. And usually it comes from other places and there’s some additive. But it usually comes from other organisms. Other non disaster organizations. Let’s, look at some of the sectors for two thousand eleven. So the arts sector how how did that fair last year? The the, uh, art sector, if you bear with me for just a moment. Sure got eight, eight sectors here to look over. The art sector was up for the year. Six point eight percent and the forecast for next year is for it to finish up five point two percent, which is better. Than the than the forecast for the aggregate national e-giving and but then their results this year weren’t quite as good as the aggregate national number. Yes. Okay. And what about you have ah, sector called society benefit? What is that? The society benefit is his organization’s, um, usually passed through organizations like united way? Uh, those those kinds of organizations would be included in society benefit jewish federations, those sorts of things. Okay, just a reminder for our listeners. I’m with rob mitchell, ceo of atlas, of giving. We’re talking about looking at giving two thousand eleven and two thousand twelve. How did those society benefit organizations do? In last year, they were almost at the national average, up seven point three percent and they’re projected to be almost at the national average next year. Five point zero percent okay, so pretty steady, but then religion i see has been, uh, losing market share. Religion has been losing market share and that’s been a trend that is that has continued for a number of years. Religion did not finish as strong as the nation did in two thousand eleven. Oppcoll let me get to that number really quickly, so recision was up, but not as much as the overall that’s correct, it was up six point five percent, but here’s the interesting thing for the forecast. For next year, it’s only forecast to grow less than half half of the national growth rate for giving so it’s projected to be up one point six percent and thousand twelve what’s the current market share current market shortages um, thirty five percent and how many years has it been since that’s? What you said several, but do we know when that when the decline in market share began? I don’t have that at my fingertips, like certainly get you that information? Because i don’t have that at my fingertips, do we? Don’t you know that there was a declining market share this year? Okay? And it dropped one percent from thirty six percent down to thirty five percent this past year. All right. And what do you expect for next year? Are you able to forecast that market share? Yes, we are able to forecast the market share. And so now i was i was misstated. Religion went religion was at thirty seven percent in two thousand ten. It was a thirty six percent in two thousand eleven, and it looks like if things go according to the forecast that it could be as low as thirty five percent next year. Okay, do we know where that where those dollars air going and again, it’s not a zero sum game, but do you have a sense of that, or not? Really? Well, you know, we we look at lots of different news and information about a lot of different things, and one of the things that’s no secret is that mainline churches in the u s have been losing membership, and it continues to be a problem for them, so that certainly is a contributing factor. The one thing that has not helped religion this past year and this is true of a lot of organizations that rely on lots of small gifts from lots of small donors, is that unemployment as a factor, has been particularly significant because when people fear being unemployed or they are unemployed, they discontinue their giving and often don’t resume their giving until they’ve had a chance to catch up after being re employed of course, like ours and furniture and clothes and taking vacations. That have been put off paying off debt, etcetera? Yes, so that that lags actually from the so the giving of a lag from a change from a decrease in the unemployment rate. Yes. Okay. Okay. Let’s, look a little at some of the sources, and i know you’re able tto look at individual foundation corporate m bequest. What happened to individual giving last year? Individual e-giving i was actually really, really good this past year. Individual e-giving was up. Um a little hang on one second. Let me get to that information. Individual giving was up seven point eight percent, slightly better than the national average. And the individual e-giving forecast for next year is pretty close to what we forecast for the aggregate it’s three point seven percent. Okay. And what was the just the overall dollar amount of individual giving for last year? Two hundred sixty point one. Eight billion. And that represents what percentage of total giving? Seventy five percent has that seventy five percent been pretty steady. It has been very study. It is. Okay. Um, let’s, look at some others. So foundation giving what? What happened that last year? And what’s forecast foundation giving. Wasn’t quite as good as the national seven point five percent. It was up six point, two percent in two thousand eleven, but next year it’s forecast to be currently forecast to be better the national giving it’s it is forecast to go up six point three percent. So steady growth in foundation e-giving from two thousand eleven to two thousand twelve way have just a couple of minutes left. Rob this number’s a really interesting is only so much time we can spend on them. What about the bequest numbers? Tony? I had a feeling you were gonna ask me, i’ll as planned giving is in my heart, of course, save the best for last bequest giving was exactly up as the same amount as the national e-giving average, it was up seven point five percent. It isn’t, uh it isn’t keeping pace. In two thousand twelve, according to our forecast, it’s going to be up three point, zero percent, and, of course, these air realized request. This is not expected, of course, and what percentage of total giving is a bequest? Revenue bequest revenue is, uh seven percent. Okay. And that’s been steady. Is that right? Okay. Last thing i’m gonna ask you is just something maybe a little fun because that we just have, like thirty seconds or so left. Since you can do this by state what’s the one of the most and least generous states in the country. Well, the most generous states in two thousand eleven for pennsylvania, illinois and florida according to their growth rates, pennsylvania had experienced upward are experienced growth of eleven point eight percent. Illinois eleven point four percent florida ten point five percent ok, and how about the other end? Um, there are a whole group of states which were there. Isn’t there isn’t a clear leader at the bottom, if you will. Okay, all right, so we weigh don’t have time to really to go through the list. We don’t want to embarrass anybody, any state randomly, so we’ll just leave it at that and we do have to leave it there for a mitchell is ceo of atlas of giving, you’ll find it atlas of giving dot com we were spending time talking about looking at giving two thousand eleven and two thousand twelve rob thank you very much for being a guest. You don’t need the fancy stuff for your plan e-giving for small and midsize charities really having just a bequest marketing program and stopping there can be a very respectable planned e-giving program. First of all, bequests are where any program starts or irrespective of what your mission is or how big you are. You’re always going to start with requests because they’re the most popular planned gift expect about seventy five percent of your plan gifts to be bequests, and they’re easy for people to understand. Everybody knows what a will is, everybody needs a will. I may not have it, but everybody needs one and they know what one is so it’s an easy type of giving toe understand through a state plans and, um, for a lot of charities, that’s the place to end because you don’t need to spend money on expertise tohave people including you in their will so you could be going into real estate or the sophisticated trust or even charitable gift annuities, but you don’t have to don’t let a fear of the more sophisticated gift and the expertise required for some of them keep you away from inaugurating a plan giving program, start with requests and stopped there and it’s a very respectable and solid plan giving program, and that is tony’s take two for friday, january twenty seventh, the fourth show of two thousand twelve. Now i have breaking the mold in traditional endowment design to pre recorded at the national conference on philanthropic planning last year and here’s that interview welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of the national conference on philanthropic planning. We are on the river walk in san antonio, texas. My guests right now are catherine miree attorney berry catherine is principal of katherine w miree and associates in birmingham, alabama, and attorney berry is a partner in law firm of wyatt, tarrant and combs in louisville, kentucky. Catherine durney welcome, thanks so much pleasure to have you. Your seminar topic is breaking the mold options in traditional endowment design. Catherine wanted to start with you. What the, uh what do we need to break the mold? What’s wrong with traditional design? Tony, i think if you look at the issues and lawsuits right now, where donors are suing charities, what it really reveals is that perpetual is a long time and it’s not entirely practical, to be very prescriptive in creating a long term funds to really look at the issues and talk about some of the solutions to the problems we see out there right now. Okay, durney, let’s, turn to the attorney. What are just some of the legal issues that we’re seeing in these lawsuits that katherine’s talking about right? Well, you you need to look at it from three different points of view. From the donor’s point of view. A planner and a charity are promising that they will do to certain things. And the donor believes him on the donor’s family believes them. And so the question is, can we really design an endowment that will work the way the donor wants over a very long period of time? Then you got issues from the charity’s pointed to it. Does it? Does a charity really want in particular endowment, particularly? If it’s if it’s very, very specific, it may be one thing if what you’re doing is saying we want teo, i had to pay for historical research. But if we say this is for research into the causes of world war i in one hundred years, that may not be something that the university say needs money for and the last, the last aspect that will be talking about is awareness of the effects on society. Is it good for us to have enormous accumulations and endowments? On the other hand, let’s suppose that we cut back on those for any of a variety of reasons. Is that good for society? They’re just complicated issues. And we like tio start people thinking about you and catherine a cz we’re getting into the topic. Let’s, let’s, define endowment. What were we talking about when we’re in these funds? What we mean that’s a great question to may endowment is any poo of fund set aside for the long term use of a charity or for charitable purposes? And so, in that respect, it could be what we all consider a traditional endowment at a university or hospital or any charity. Where the donor makes a gift to the charity and says, don’t spend the principal use only their earnings, or it could be a vehicle like a private foundation, which we see among a lot of the wealthy and a private foundation is perpetual and purpose, and it is, in truth, a pool of funds you’re required by law to distribute five percent of you’re investable assets that you but that’s an endowment, a supporting or could be an endowment, a donor advised funds could be an endowment, a charitable lied trust could be an endowment substitute. So these air all funds where the principle is invested in the earnings are used for charitable purposes, okay? But as attorney pointed out, the donor’s may have specific things that they want to fund, so if we’re going to be donor-centric shouldn’t we just allow them to do what they really want to do with their money and their gift? I love talking about donor-centric what that maims it doesn’t mean letting the donor run amok with a charitable purpose that would take a charity off mission, for example, attorney has a great example of that that makes me smile. Go ahead. Not my favorite one is let’s suppose that i wanted to go to my my church on tao, the singing of amazing grace. You can’t use the money to seeing how great thou art, but you can use it to sing amazing grace and some of the pastor says we’re going to do with that gift. We can have special robes for the singing of amazing grace. We could have a special rise or for the choir to sit to stand on, but all i’m really doing is disrupting the operation of the church and charity should be very sensitive to that, and i don’t, and somebody should come to me and say, well, it’s, wonderful that you like amazing grace and we can call the fund the amazing grace find, but but we just can’t administer a fun like that on a reasonable donors is going to go ahead and change that if you get some thoughtful back and forth and emphasizes his, catherine said the importance donor-centric donors want to help the mission of the endowment charity they’re they’re they’re working with, so you need to meld those, too. And catherine, if you’re attorney said, if the donor is reasonable and really wants to help the charity. Aren’t they going to be receptive to the explanation that that kind of purpose for an endowment just doesn’t suit us? Two of the things to the trends that i see that i think bear on this issue are one term endowments and to creating flexibility within the endowment and a method for or mechanism for change, i’ll give you a good example. I had a donor walk in and wanted to create a million dollar endowment for a program called success by six and the conversation i had with that does age six, i assume not six o’clock in the afternoon, right? Right, trying to do it in a day, six years success by six is an early childhood intervention education intervention program that catches kids when they’re three or four and prepares him tto learn and it’s a critical time in their lives and a lot of poor families. I don’t have that kind of support for children, and my question to the donor was, what are you really trying to accomplish? And when they said, i love these programs that go in and prepare young children, my response was let’s say that let’s don’t name a program that might not be here in a few years. Let’s talk about outcomes, let’s talk about what you want to do, so donors air prescriptive because they haven’t really thought of any other options, and i think our job is planners is to back him up a little bit and talk more about outcomes and purposes in terms, so we have options. We have the reflect, the limited term endowment and what was the other that you mentioned flexibility put in a plan b, a plan c in the event that the first purpose is no longer impactful? Effective makes okay now attorney in your work are you seeing donors who are receptive to these breaking the mold of what we’ve been doing for decades? Sure, let let let’s take, for example, and arts group the louisville orchestra if you have a donor who wants to benefit the louisville orchestra and wants to create a very long term endowment, it’s pretty easy to persuade the donor that a fund should be for the benefit or castro music in louisville, kentucky, an example of which is the level orchestra and that’s what? Should be funded first, but if one hundred years from now there’s some other something, then the larger purpose is funding live classical music and louisville today, we can’t really conceive of that it any other way than an orchestra that may be true in one hundred years, but but who knows? Education is another really good, and you have the issue of bankruptcy. Our orchestra and birmingham went bankrupt and took down with it a number of funds that donor said contributed so in attorneys example, what do you do? Have you protected the funds in one of our jobs? Is planners if we’re representing the donor, is to protect those funds for the use that they intended. So what do you do in that situation? And i hear that a lot from potential donors. What happens if the college or the orchestra doesn’t exist any longer? How do we protect the donor? Well, they’re they’re number of ways you could do that, one of which is you can put the assets the endowment in a separate organization in a philanthropic fund, a private foundation, a community foundation, a supporting or where it is not the charity’s directly, so that’s one way to do it another way is to have a gift over it’s a little extreme. What does that mean? Gift over way have jargon jail here on tony martignetti not probably don’t my antenna are always up when i’m with an attorney, right? Right? No way. What did you say left over as long as as long as that particular organization is doing x, then the endowment will be theirs. But if not, it will go over to a second organization. So the second organization has an incentive to police what the first organization is doing so let’s say let’s say that what i do is i create endowment for ah, for a hospital that’s supposed to be used to support it’s it’s women’s programs and for whatever reason, the hospital stopped doing that it goes in and becomes a long term care facility. If i have a gift over to another hospital, the other hospital is going to raise the red flag and say, oh, first hospital isn’t doing this anymore where’s our money? Well, that’s, a very that’s, a very good way to do it, and you’re finding non-profits are willing to accept that oversight. By another local non-profit i mean, but but because again they don’t they don’t think they’re ever going to get out of that business, and so it helps them do whatever it is they want to do. The harder ones, quite honestly, are something like a library where you have donors who really want to fund collections, and you have to have the very difficult conversation, particularly with elderly people, that collections may not be books, and they really don’t know when they say not books, they think, oh, it’s, going to be some endless room of computers and dvds and and a bunch of kids playing and this is not what we want to do, and you have to say, well, it’s, not entirely true, if, if in in, you know, the year one hundred somebody had endowed the creation of a pirate’s manuscript, you you would have wanted them to fund gutenberg, and they all kinda well, yeah, that’s, that’s, true, but but those air harder organizations, catherine let’s, take a step back and think about some smaller organizations that that really just wanted. Maybe they’re at the stage where they say we need to have an endowment. We want to start an endowment. What should they be thinking of our around the issues that you attorney are concerned about? I think the first place to start is the role of endowment, both internally. I always looking to cases for endowment. One is thie internal case. Why do we need an endowment, how we’re going to use it. So everybody over the board is saying, we need one, you want to, you want to question, why, okay? And why do you need one? And what is its role going? Tobe a and i don’t think people talk about that enough. And then that second case is washing donors. Invest in the endowment, talking alternative radio, twenty four hours a day. Told you. Durney what attorney, in terms of structuring endowment, from a legal perspective, what does the charity beginning that process need to be thinking of? Well, you you need to decide, is it going to be an internal endowment or an external in down there? You’re going to keep it on your books or are you going to create an organization or creative fund at a community ways you mentioned earlier, communiqu, conditional donorsearch vie, having donors use their own donor advised funds that said, ok, so what do you want in house or do you or do you not? And then what sort of what sort of restrictions are you going to impose? What sort of gifts are you going to solicit? One of the things that that i fine at least, is that often time, endowments and plan giving generally very unfortunately serves a work avoidance function, it is we’ve got somebody on staff or the board says, oh, we’ve got a lot of older donors we need to raise endowment dollars from them, but nobody really wants to go ask anybody for endowment money, so they say we’ll order some brochures and we’ll mail the brochures out and we’ll have a plan and we’ll have a committee, and at the end of the day, they’re shocked to discover that nobody gives any money and so they then divert the person to doing special events, and three or four years later, somebody on the board says, we need to get serious about endowment, and we start the process all over again, you know? Oh, and and and you see it when you look at resumes, most of the resumes among the smaller charities in certainly in our area there the plan giving officers have us much special event experience as they do playing e-giving experience the ones where you have success are the people who are committed, and they say, it’s future, we’re going after the future all of fund-raising at the end of the day, it’s just telling your story. And if you have people in the organization who aren’t comfortable telling the story, i e fund-raising that’s a problem kapin you’re shaking your head, as tony was saying, future anything you want to say they’re no, i agree, i agree with him. Absolutely. I generally look at annual operating annual fund-raising supporting operations plan giving and deferred giving supporting endowment because it’s a one time gift, it perpetuates the donor’s ongoing gift. We know that those gifts come from the most committed donors, so i don’t disagree with you. You know, i thought maybe you were shaking your head in chagrin over over organizations that might be doing what i do. I see it all the time. So how should we structure internally in terms of fund-raising to avoid the the problems that attorney is describing when we’re starting an endowment, campaign or program? You know, i think an endowment campaign on its own is the hardest thing any charity will ever do. I look at it as part of the bigger picture, part of the bigger case. Two donors that they need to invest now and in the future, i see. I really think having people the son to play e-giving and having the disciplined allocate those gifts to endowment as quasi endowment, which is bored. Allocated as opposed to donor ellicott. Ok, let’s, talk a little about that quasi endowment. That was okay, too. Real types of endemic one is true endowment. That is where the donor places to restrictions on those funds that you cannot spend the principal. You may only use the earnings. The other is quasi endowment, and quasi is bored. Allocated endowment. That means the gift comes in without the restrictions. But the board itself places an endowment because it has the discipline to do that. And that is the easiest way. Oh, so that’s that’s an unrestricted gift that might just be a thousand dollar annual gift. It’s and the board makes a difficult decision. Yes, to not spend it right and put it into its true endowment. Right. And, you know the other argument i usually give, charity says if you budget a state gifts, you are basically budgeting death and that it’s a little tricky in terms of the unrestricted gifts being allocated to endowment by the board. Is there ah, policy or a guideline that you like to see a certain percentage of unrestricted gifts being devoted to endowment? I look at it. Mohr is all the testamentary gifts. The things that are triggered by the death of the donor. If the charity will put one hundred percent of those an endowment, it will basically in tao in many cases, the donor’s annual gift i wanted to. See have all that discipline and then if they need, if you have policies it’s, goingto be howto we withdraw some of those funds, but how do we use them that’s so hard to do, though in especially in the midst of a recess? Shin still, but attorney, i see you nodding. You agree it is, but you could never make any progress. It seems to me if you’re if you are always having to find new donors, you want to be able to tell the story two new people every year, but you want to continue to capture the story of our capture, the people you’ve already told story too. So if you’ve got a donor who gives you a thousand dollars a year, if you could get ten thousand dollars as a request or is a longer term gift of some sort, then this is good because they’ve basically funded their gift and now i can go after the next person aunt, i can actually expand and grow and develop in a way that it’s very difficult to do if you every year are starting from scratch. Of course, catherine, as our consultant, we know that the cost of acquiring a new donor is considerably greater than e-giving follow-up gift from an existing it isthe and i look at it it’s maximizing the donor’s role with the charity. If they are giving to you every year, you need to make that ask that they give in perpetuity and many of them will you’re not going to find people walking around on the streets that there going to make it down my gifts that haven’t that don’t have any other connection to your charity know you’re looking for that commitment in terms of and doesn’t that commitment. Evenflo teo two donors who were giving it small levels, right? Let’s, talk a little about that. Catherine. I see direct mail organizations whose average gifts eyes on an annual basis is very low. They don’t have those hi n major gifts, and yet there is committed and they might leave an average of st gift of thirty or forty thousand. It may not be as large as the major gift donors, but it’s significant, no charity would turn that what? So look to your small giving your donors were making small gifts, but doing it consistently maybe that zach decade arm or decades? Sometimes we see in longstanding organism right best the number one indicator, and what i have learned is that many of those donors make their only major gift at death because they can’t afford to do it doing like we have to leave it there been with katherine miree principle of katherine w miree and associates in birmingham, alabama, and turny bury a partner in a law firm, wyatt, tarrant and combs in louisville, kentucky.
